The GX engine in our Coupe came from Japan in 91 (one of those 30K motors). When I thought we would have some Tarmac Rally in our neck of the woods I installed the H-Prod head, we have to get 68 and newer cars smogged in Vegas. The GX parts went to Finland. Fortunately I found another one, as GX parts were used on a whole host of A series powered cars they are still somewhat easy to find.
I've always bought parts in lots and have found about half the items labeled GX to be something else............still quite useful but not GX. I'd love to have a genuine GX coupe but at 20K you'd really have to want one. With all the 1200 stuff available now, half the money would buy twice the car, of course it would have no collector value.....................but a collector 1200, please don't spoil my fun little car with collector value (leave that for the Z crowd).

If your talking about the little parts like badges, gear sticks, etc. they are imported from Japan, and sold for a profit... thats where my GX badge came from.

The only 1200 coupe GX(Datsun factory built) was the one Datsun imported for us at John Roxbourgh Motors(Datsun Racing Team) back in the 70s. Other coupes were built up back then to try and look and go like the one and only, but could never succeed. As far as i can recall these cars were never sold in australia.
The GX heads were avaliable over the counter and many Clubmans had them on there 1200 motors.
Which is why there are a few GX heads floating around.
Hope this helps or confuses you???
GREG.
PS Some one on this site says he has the 1200 coupe that use to belong to the racing team,he may wish to contact us and let us know what condition it is in today??

The way I remember it, in order to be able to race a car in the Bathurst Classic back in the days when all the cars were showroom stock [yeah, right] it was necessary for a manufacturer to demonstrate that a minimum of 100 cars, identical to the one presented for scrutineering had been registered in Australia. After all, it was a production car race & it was necessary to show that new car buyers could actually buy one.

I also remember that Holden recalled a small number of Monaro 350's one year, to replace the seats with the uprated [racer] item so that their race cars could qualify under the 100 identical models rule. At no cost to the owners too, I believe.
For other manufacturers, they had dealers registering unsold floor stock just so they could get their racer onto the track

Now if the Datsun 1200 GX was raced in this event, then I presume that a minimum of 100 cars were released into the market. If they sold the car to the public, then they would have to support it with spare parts & I have always believed that this is why the GX was listed in the Aussie parts book & why I was able to buy a new cylinder head & all the parts rquired to make it a complete assembly, which is what I did in the early 80's.
Yes, I still have the head & it has been run for so long that I wore it out twice & finally got Feral [Datrats] to do a major rebuild on it for my A13 engine.

So, the question is, did Nissan/Datsun Australia sell 100 examples of the 1200 GX coupe in Australia or am I suffering from fuzzy memory?

As has been stated previously over and over again and hinted by Dodgy,a car can be sold by a dealer but not actually hit the road, more importantly all the go fast bits had to be homologated and imported cars did'nt have to sell the numbers(in spare parts)that the Aussie made cars did.
Yes there was lots of GX stuff available over the spare parts counter, but walking out with a complete car,now that was a differant issue all together.

Interesting you mention the 350 Monaro...my Dad missed out on that seat recall.I was only ever allowed to drive it on very special occasions...i now know why,a missile with no brakes, but the pose value was as good as it got!

It is as mentioned quite common for Proddie racers to go direct to race teams they're sale is simply on paper.

Dave as to smog in Las Vegas, yes it's a pain and to make matters even more confusing if you live just 25 miles outside of town you don't smog and car......like at all even new ones!!! You have to line hear but basically Las Vegas is not Nevada, Nevada is still a very rural western state, Las Vegas has been moderately Californicated.
