Hi all, can someone please tell me what type of front suspension a Datto 1000 has. Is it the same as a 1200 front end? I know it's probably a stupid question but I don't really know anything about the Datto 1000.
Thanks for any info!
Cheers, Shane

The 1000 has a transverse leaf spring front end, which means a leaf spring is going across from one front wheel to the other (odd set-up) and I use to race one.
Saying that, 1200's and 1000's have very different front ends.

...and double wishbones.

this is a pic of Gary Hamilton's 1000 coupe sport sedan. Retains almost all factory suspension components!

No strut towers means more engine bay room.
Thats how I got the 253 into mine reasonably easily.
And how I plan to fit the VG30DET into my orange coupe.

By the way I picked up a Z18T today to put into my white coupe quite cheap......now I just need to get organised

I dont think the engine bay has more room than the 1200. I compared the engine bay with a 1200 and the 1000 is smaller by a fraction being narrower. Imagine a steve newing 230hp ca18 NA engine.. the stuff of dreams.
Gee Id love to know that Gary hamilton coupe disk setup!!! it looks like the hubs are alloy??!!
Anyone know?
Also I looked at stevos 1000 and its also got some mega mazda disk setup.
All this will remain a mystery I gather cause the cars have changed so many hands...

I looked at a possible custom strut setup for the 1000 to eliminate the leaf setup. The best so far is to use the hillman imp gt front struts bracket and redrill it to support a modern mr2 billet adjustable strut and ford cobra wishbones with alloy hat rotors and brembo holden vl vented calipers, I heard lj torana rack and pinion can be adapted as well from mammi motors. The problem is the bracket on the imp hillman has a thicker inner guard for strength which would on a 1000 need a setup like stevos tube chassis supports replacing the inner guards.

Yes my sports sedan runs the LJ torana front setup with custom upper and lower arms with coilovers. It is however a full chassis car so the pickup points are totally off for a normal road car.

I will be running a similar system on my white coupe with NEW Z18 TURBO I got today.....whoooohooooo.
Essentially it will be similar to a Westfield/Lotus 7 front suspension. Its do-able its juts a case of getting around to it.

Steves setup with the Mazdas I'd like a closer look at with the wheel off.

The Hamilton coupe setup looks easy to replicate. Like my disc street setup. Just a matter of locating a suitable disc. Hubs are relatively easy to make. I detest ovlov calipers though.

Since your a brake especialist do you know a cheap alloy hatted disk rotor to suit a conversion and what lightweight caliper to suit it???

Anyone know if Gary runs a custom alloy hub???

Also to do the lotus 7 type setup the inner guard would have to be removed cause its like a kleenex and replaced with a tube setup like stevos.

No such thing as a cheap alloy hatted disc.
Smallest one DBA does is the WRX disc at 294mm x 25.4mm. WRX however uses a cast iron caliper so you wouldn't want to use that.
Cheap light calipers would be Willwood Dynalites. I am not a fan of american stuff but they are O.K if your not expecting european quality.
Willwood also make flat discs to match and then you just make up your own alloy hat or use their prefab hats.
They have a 10.5" vented disc 20.5mm thick that might just fit under 13's with the little caliper.
Having alloy hubs made would be easy. Just take te sample you want reproduced to Alloy Race Components in Morrabbin and tell John you want some just like that but in 6061 T6 or other such grade material. Throw enough money at him and he'll do it.
