my A14 is bellowing out Blue smoke all over the shop! so i'm thinking rebuild, piston, rings, havn't pulled the head off yet, so dont quite know the situation.
just wondering what would a rebuild cost, piston, rings, ect, or is it it worth finding, another engine like A15 with mods???

Bluish/white smoke = burning oil.
It could be just the valve seals, which can be replaced without removing the head. This generally causes blue smoke when you first start the engine, then stop after a minute or so.
If it pours out smoke when you rev it, that's the rings. Do a compression test to verify. You generally do not need to replace the pistons, just hone the cylinder, replace the rings and of course the gaskets.
If it is smoking at idle, it's either really worn, or something is wrong (like too much oil in the engine). Do a compression check to double-check.

First thing and most important is do a compression check. Then a few conclusions may be drawn

ok, so it blows blue smoke out on idle, and still bellows out when driving, comp: is 170 on all except for number 2, it has 120.
might invest in new engine.

From what i have been reading........sounds like the problems lies with cylinder #2......more than likely the rings on this cylinder are no longer sealing...................i dont think this warrants investing a whole new engine.......just a rebuild of the one you have. Depending on the condition of the pistons, you may be able to get away with honing the bores and fitting new rings. It all depends how far you go......do you replace the friction bearing while the engine is apart etc etc. Engine parts for the mighty A-series are relatively inexpensive. Benny

trickdat, test #2 again, then squirt a couple squirts of clean engine oil in the spark plug hole, and test it again. If it jumps up close to 170 lbs, it's the rings.
