yeah- we're pretty lucky still in SA, I wouldn't count on it staying that way though... I'm just glad I'm well and truly off my P's! Feel sorry for you guys... especially those trying to do the right thing with designated drivers when they go out etc. SA's now looking at following the Eastern states on not allowing P platers to carry passengers at night (which I think is totally wrong, and actually encourages people to drink and drive - far more of a problem than whether your 1200 has an a12 or a14 in it!)

Dattodude- you didnt answer my question, providing a car is not turbo or v8 and is engineered for all modifications, is it legal to be driven by a p plater?

If the engine is not standard, it is modified.
IT seems the QLD and Victoria rules make it succinctly clear that if a modification requires engineers certificate, then it's banned.

I don't have any experience of a p-plater having such a car in NSW.
So like I said. Call the RTA.

There's always putting an bigger A series crank into an A12 block....if you want to cheat that is.

I think that's what I am going to do. Rebuild the A12 with 14-15 parts. Just cheat. Cause technically it isn't a modification because you can have parts from newer models in your older car without having to have a mod plate. = ]

hey im looking at getting a bit more power from my 120y an from what i have read here it would be wise to build a 1400 from your 1200 block because it still has A12 engine stamp an engine numbers? what is needed to do this is it just the crank that needs to be changed or do pistons need to be changed around as well? also can you put the oval head of the A14 onto the A12?

A14/ A15 blocks are taller, so this isn't as easy as it sounds. Be nice if it were that simple though!

I'm not too sure how seriously the police police the rule in NSW. A guy I know has a hotted up N/A Supra with air filter, exhaust, injectors etc and has been booked for speeding/burnouts and defected before, and he hasn't been bothered about his engine mods on P plates. Not that I don't condone breaking the law :)
