Last week I did someting that I thought I would never do. I threw the #2 connecting rod out the side of my A15 block.
I guess it was bound to happen.
I installed my standby A14 motor which has been freshly rebuilt.
No mods to the engine itself. Does not pull as well as the A15 but it will have to do until the end of this years racing season.
For next year I am off to better things. I picked up a Z24 motor and will be modifying the car to put it in.
If anyone has done this mod and has some good ideas, please let me know. Also I am going to be needing a different tranny.
Any ideas?

Man that sounds like a fun swap

I got a z22 that would look right at home in the 120Y (b210)

I wonder how similar to L series the bottom end / mounts would be....

I'll be following this one!

I think youll find all your answers in ozdat.com
using the calculator also
http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/enginedesign/
the z24 runs out of puff quickly and the z heads
are only made for torque and low rpm performance.

The best combo is the 2140cc using the z22 block
bored to 89mm and using the l20b crank and head.
This is stated in many threads.

z22 block bored out to 89mm
l20b head mildly ported and cleaned up
89mm z24 pistons milled to 31.95mm from 34mm
z20e prepped conrods at 152.5mm
arp conrod bolts, head and main cap arp stud kit
1.773 rod stroke ratio
zero deck height
2140cc etc
tuned quad 40mm bike carbs on custom manifold
and good aftermarket headers.

Well at least we now know the limits of a stock A15: about 200 lb. ft. of torque (?) before the rods break ...

Go the Z24, no need to rev it up as much as the Z22 to gain the same power.

Wonder what it would have done with ARP rod bolts, looks like a rod bolt failure?

The car died at the track after a pass and I could not get it started. It seemed like the starter was shot but it wouldn't push start either. I trailered it home and installed a new starter. The starter worked hard to turn the engine over but it fired up. I heard some noise and rev'd the motor to see if the sound would change and WHAM! It seized up. The rod bolts failed but I do believe the rod was initally bent before the failure.
Im looking forward to this Sunday. I want to see how well the A14 does. Higher compression but I stayed with the stock cam. After installing the motor back in the car, I wish I would have pulled the racing cam from the A15 and put it in the A14. Not to worried though, looking forward to installing the Z24.
I found this video on the net. This car is running a 13.1 in the 1/4 mile.

Datsun 210 with Z24 motor

As soon as I get everything straightened out, there maybe some A series parts for sale.

Keep the motor standard... they are a real good motor.

I just put a Z24 in my 180b (610), it fit the same as a L18, except they lean the opposite way so had to swap engine mounts from left to right and bolted in, using a L gearbox isn't a good idea because the box will be at the wrong angle. The Z24 box should be the same as a 240SX Box and will be at the correct angle for the motor.

You'll need a custom sump to clear your crossmember and will have to give a few love taps around where the bellhousing might touch the trans tunnel but you won't have to cut the tunnel out, I have done 2 L16 conversions to manual trans 1200s and never had to cut anything on the whole car to fit one. Tailshaft will need to be custom unless you can fit with a 1200 auto tailshaft, depending on how far back you can get the motor.

The overall block height is 1.5 inches taller than a L16/18, and .75 inches taller than a L20. But the great thing about Z-series motors is the head is a lot shorter making the whole motor around 2inches shorter than a L16.

Its probably an easier swap than a L16.

Cool, the Z22 or Z24 would be plenty for a sub 1000kg Datto ;)

I was hoping the block wouldn't be too much larger, so the fact that its 2 inches lower all up than an L16 will make install into the 120Y nice n easy

Great info mate

The only issue is the manifold comes out the head higher up than on a Lseries so you can't use a stock hitachi carb (can't get an aircleaner on it) not really an issue, every 4cyl should have a pair of sidedraughts hanging off it.
