Pigdogs setup is what Id aim for, no pollution gear and all the main things
required already done. The L series is stronger than any modern engine and
easier to find parts for. An option I didnt see coming!
With all the work its had done Im sure if you wanted more it will only
need a cam change and some tuning to suit.

Yes maybe a very good option

I did go for the A14 powered coupe cause I loved the sound they can make with webers, but after driving it around a bit, adding webers etc isn't going to be enough for me.

I was going to buy the blue CA18det coupe on carsales thats been for sale for ever, but got hooked on youtube clips of Tomei A13's.

It's kinda why I don't want to go CA as I could have bought one done, doh!!!

I'd love to go Sr20det and would in a herat beat if I could get it passed rego in NSW and it was legal. Don't really want to loose my house if I have a crash or even someone crashes into me and my insurance gets voided for being unroadworthy.

your best bet is a CA18det is the best powered engineered engine you can throw in it, i was gonna go that way my self but $$$ is too much and i wanted to drive one asap so thats why i went J port 13b, supra w58, 9 inch diff, 300mm brakes all round, 48mm ida webber.... might seem like i spend heaps but not if you know what your doing, my engine bay has no wiring anywhere as its basic i did my self as its carbi, and im expected well over 250hp

turbo to come soon. but then again its not legal as i use mainly to run at the drags.... but then again..

well with the power my L series has/had in the car it was definately fun, especially going through corners and stuff and geting to hear the engine work

CA is more fun in straight lines with the extra. but like i said in the PM, wasnt as smooth and didnt sound as nice

yeah id probably go an L series swap for cost effective fun and simplicity, if that gets too tame maybe source a SC14 for it ive seen them on ebay from $200-800... this is the most likely path i would take if i could get my hands on a sedan

Thanks again for all the advice

I had a series 1 Rx-7 last year that weighed 980kg, and was dyno'd at 174rwhp with a extended bridge 13B. I really wasn't impressed with it at all, no torque and didn't feel that quick at all.

My Rx-2 I just sold had 180rwhp, 12AT and weighed 1100kg with a 9inch, again didn't fell that quick and I didn't like the boost curve even though it had a small turbo

I'm a fussy bastard thats for sure!

But, the things that I mostly didn't like about those cars was the complete package, they both handled poorly and drove like pigs

I guess I want the complete package, good acceleration, good handling and good braking + nice and fun to drive, also simple to work on / maintain.

Not too much to ask? haha

The L series is looking pretty good

if your rx-2 and rx7 weight 1000ks+ with that much power imagine with half the weight and being a ute these not much traction at that power...

A Datsun 1200 with an L series with 130hp atw and 800kg sounds like a perfect match.
For torque which is the most gratifying part of taking corners and pulling away
from low speeds you cant go past a well setup L engine.
For longevity and life expectancy the L rules again. I still miss my 180bSSS with its
stock L18, it had 377,000klms and I pulled it apart for a re-hone and rings and all the
bearings where still within tolerances so I wacked them back in an its still went strong
for almost another 150,000 until the FJ20det went in.
With the L series you can still pick the stock heads up for pittens and port them at
your leisure if you want more, but 130hpatw with the sound of webers on full song is
hard to match.
