Did the 1k's ever come with a Tacho? If so are they hard to come by?

If not any suggestions on an aftermarket one (something small) and are they hard to hook up?

Hamza

The Australian Datsun 1000 Deluxe Coupe [KB10] came standard with a tach, as did the Japanese Sunny Coupe GL, but it was an option in the JDM Sunny Coupe Deluxe.

A dash-top tach was offered as an accessory in Japan but Australia got only the option parts, not the accessory parts.
This tach was fitted in the same spot that would otherwise be used for a small pod mounted clock, so you had a choice, dash-top mounted clock or tach. You couldn't have both.

The instrument cluster mounted KB10 tach can be seen in this photo along with the smaller dash-top mounted clock & tach.
This tach was intended for non coupe models, but could of course be used in JDM Sunny DeLuxe coupes that were not fitted with the instrument cluster mounted factory option tach, if desired.

As to finding one of these dash-top tachometers, you will need a lot of luck & ready access to a lot of bucks.

I dont think I have ever seen a genuine dash top pod-style tacho.

It really would look tacked on though, when you consider how flat the standard 1k sedan/wagon/ute dash is.

The coupe dash is much nicer, in my opinion, but the standard dash has a certain simplicity about it that makes it endearing.

Dodgeman, looking at the photo shows three "pods". Two smaller ones, and a larger one.

I know one of the smaller ones are for the clock, and i assume that the 2nd smaller one is the tacho.

So whats the bigger one for?

And is that a fire extinguisher and flares i see on the far right in red?

Subwoofer ... Thats about the size im looking for ... Something nice and small, but i was thinking about putting it just under the dash (where your switchs are) ...

Excuse the silly question (im mechanically illiterate) How hard is it to hook up?

Are those speakers in the kick panels?

I was thinking of the same thing, but i cant seem to fit a 6.5" on the drivers side without the accelerator coming in the way ...

1. Neither have I & I also suspect that I never will.

2. Agreed.

3. Yep, I agree with that too.

4. Yep, the second pod would be the tach.

5. That's the factory tach for the coupe instrument cluster.

6. Yep, fire extinguisher & flares. Apart from starting wet wood on a campfire, I fail to see what genuinely practical advantage flares serve in an automotive situation, but apparently they are popular in the US as well.
In Australia the posession of a flare is probably illegal for all I know.

I suppose you could use the fire extinguisher to bust a side window on some fools Toyoyoyo & drop in a lighted flare to help rid the world of another blight on the landscape. LOL

Hey Hamza,

VDO do a few nice designs, they are expensive though. And I guess you're sorta limited to the small fascia types, the one that Kent has is about as big as you want to go. The next sizes up will start looking like you've attached your living room clock to the dash.

There was an orange 4dr (was for sale a couple of times this year) and it had a huge monster tachometer mounted and it really did look ridiculous even more so as it was attached to stock A12 I think.

I found a OHDEN Japanese brand Tacho at a swap meet and then bought a NOS one after that, both were cheap ($20.00 and $50.00) and both suited the chroming and general style of the 1000. They are well made too (I wouldn't go as far to say they are high quality but certainly well made- No longer available by the way, I think they stopped making them many, many years ago).

EDIT: Most of the small, compact tachos (that are cheap and have a decent rev range) are associated with snowmobiles and ski-doo's, eBay Canada is your best bet as they have them for cheap. Postage should be about $8.00 - $12.00 US here is an example (yeah not the best example but you get the idea): eBay Canada Ski doo Tacho

Maybe have a quick search, key dimensions are across the fascia and I guess the depth is somewhat important.

At the moment I do not know where to mount it. I was leaning toward mounting it under the dash under the light switch or on the other side but it's too low to be a useful dash-instrument as the line of site is out. Next optins are low-down on the pillar or on the steering wheel column like Kent has done.

Here are some pictures of it, very compact with a chrome lip and fairly plane fascia;
