here in malaysia, "dry cell" or calcium calcium battery is very expensive. about twice the price of "normal" maintenance free battery. but the size and weight is like, 30 percent smaller. damn, mine was stolen!

throw away the dash if you are really serious, and punch holes at the doors, inside parts. of course, the doors trimming is gone.

the heat insulator at the roof, throw it away. rear defogger, throw it away. if you can, make a smaller fuel tank, and discard the stock tank, unless you drive your sunny far.

you can discard one wiper blade though :)

love it! just the way i think. most super cars fail to make the "magic" figure of 500bhp/ton(even the veyron does'nt cut the mustard!)power to weight(and hp per litre) inspire me. google caterham superlight r500. 0-100 in something like 2.9sec.. only weighs 400kg.
just cut 100kg off your 1200 and get 300(ish)hp and have a better power to weight than most(nearly all) supercars.
now just to get it to the ground......

I can not believe I'm reading this garbage, you want to get an extra bit of hp from 55hp to 65hp,atw or get more power by lightness, the car already can get to 600kgs how much mire lighter you wanna go before the wind blows you of the road? most cars weigh over 1200kgs we are already half that you need upgraded engine parts or a sr20det swap, now think of this a Silvia weighs 1200kgs roughly if yo put that same motor Ina datto ute with a 500kgs weight difference what do you thinks gonna happen?

you need engine power then you can add less weight
if some one can tell me if I'm wrong please do?

my silvia (drift car )
with massive strip out its down to 1000kgs with full fuel /oils
and it makes a huge difference

sadly when u pop a sr20 / bigger brakes / bigger diff you end up with a 800-900kg car with is getting very close to a silvia

to the guys wanting to strip out a datsun with 65hp i would look at working the motor too
but also look into down force

It's not about right or wrong. It is simply different approaches to performance improvement.

There are a lot of ways to lighten a car which are also free. So you get all the benefits of a lighter car and it is light on the wallet too.

Keep in mind that having more engine power does not improve your car's handling or reduce braking distances.

A combination of lighter weight and increased horsepower is obviously ideal for most people but why not maximise what you have right now?

if you add an sr20det, gearbox, intercooler & piping, 3" exhaust, upgraded diff & tailshaft to an 800kg car it very quickly becomes a 1000kg car so you may have improved acceleration but your braking and handling is actually worse.

I've always been about 'power' as a solution but more and more I'm appreciating the minimalist approach. Cheaper and better... and if you can also improve power at the same time then that's a double improvement. Eg going from stock A12 to an A15 with a cam and carbs doesn't really do a lot weight-wise (certainly not like an sr, etc) but will give you a good little power increase... and not require massive supporting mods like bigger diff etc.

My "795kg" 120Y is 980kg now that it has a CA18/box/exhaust/cooler. I'm doing some other upgrades at the moment (bigger turbo/manifold/cooler/diff) and wouldn't be surprised if it ended up close to 1100kg. Often these kinda mods make old cars nearly as heavy as new ones... but then you still have old suspension, brakes, etc and limited safety.

a very mild a15 in a 1200 and theoretically, your 1200's weight is pretty unchanged. i am concerned about weight distribution. if i put an a15 inside a 1200, the weight distribution of the car is pretty much unchanged from the stock. i wouldn't want a powerful car with the weight bias much to the front.

from my memory, a15 is 20 pounds heavier than a12, is it true?

Its horses for courses. With controlled class racing like Improved production. Weight reduction is very important.
It makes for higher cornering speeds, later braking, better acceleration off the turns and tires that wont go off as quick during a race.

Faster lap times for longer!

It certainly isnt garbarge for racing!

But for the family car, auto makers add weight to make the car safer. Things like intrusion bars, Air bags and abs.... As i said, horses for courses.
