the size difference is easy to see.the h165 diff looks like it shouldn't really fit under the back,while the h145 looks puny.to get an idea,see if you can check under the back of some of the bluebirds mentioned & it should help you telling them apart quickly.& if you can find one of those 3.7 diff ratios,grab it,cause a mate with a ute put one in his,& it changed the car completly.quieter,better mileage,higher top speed.

correct me if im wrong im no guru but if you jack up the back of your car lock one of the rear wheels and then mark the opposite tyre with chalk, then spin it slowly the tyre should rotate 4 times and the uni join on the tailshaft 11 (thats if it is a 4:11). i think thats right??

If you lock one wheel, the rotation of the other side is affected by the side gears inside the diferential. I have never actually counted the rotational diference, but i suspect that the rotating wheel will rotate twice as much as if it were rotating in concert with it's mate.

Grab a mate & rotate both wheels one revolution, & while you are watching what you are doing, & watching what your mate is doing, you also need to count the EXACT number of tailshaft revolutions.

If you feel confidant that you can tell the diference between 4.1 revolutions & 3.9 revolutions, then go for it

Guys,

After re-reading this discussion I am still a little in the dark here. Am having trouble with distingishing betwen the diff centre and diff housing / axle combinations bewteen the H145 and H165.

To upgrade the 1971 dato ute H145 diff set up, I grab a H165 diff centre and housing / axle assembly out of a series 1 or 2 bluebird or a later model ute and the whole thing bolts straight in with no mods with the current rear drum brake set up. Yes or no???
