In NSW the arbitary limit seems to be "published vehicle weight" [in Kg] x 3, expressed as cc for unblown engines, or x 2.5 for blown engines.[turbo]

This means that the CA18DET is a very good choice in a 1200 if you are into turbo's, & anything that fits, up to 2 litre, for unblown will be OK.
If you perform any surgery on the body or chassis to get it in, you will likely need an engineers certification.

I have seen far too many cars that were not inspected & approved, being used on the street. My own experience is that those who are frightened of the engineer are most often the ones with dangerously constructed vehicles. Not every one, but far too high a percentage.
We went through all of this in the hot rod game in the 70's. If it is safely constructed, it will pass. If not, i don't want to be sharing the same road with it. Sounds fair to me.

Just remember, even the parent manufacturer must demonstrate the engineering quality of each new model. Just be thankfull that we do not need to do "destruction testing" as they do.

SO WHAT IS THE PUBLISHED WEIGHT OF A 1200, IN THE HANDBOOK OF MY UTE IT SAYS THE KERB WEIGHT IS 700KG AND I WAS GOING OFF THAT WHICH WOULD LIMIT TURBO ENGINES TO 1750CC
DOESN'T MATTER TO ME AS I WONT BE PUTTING A TURBO IN, BUT JUST INTERESTED TO KNOW

I WANT TO PUT A 1.8 OUT OF A 180B IN (L18 I THINK??)

So how do things like toranas and that get away with huge V8's? and capri's and those cars how do they get the big 400's and stuff in em? and hotrods well the new kit ones are only chassis and fibreglass so how do they get the big engines in, and cobra kits, how do they do it?

aaron, don't even get started on hotrods.
they are a law unto themselves now.
there is now legislation for minimum chassis sizes, (75x50x3.0 for smaller rods like anglias, t-buckets etc and 100x50x3.0 or equivelant to original for larger rods like 32s to 41s etc) they can have the front tyre 60% the thickness of the back (ie to a max of 10inch at the rear - try that on your datto), minimum engine mounts sizes - everything.
it was pushed into force by the NSRA and is a good thing for all hotrodders - except ratrod builders.
the reason that torries can have big 400cubers is similar to the same reason i can fit a 6.0L turbocharged V8 to my 240C.
they have a massive front suspension setup - and i have the same but with a full chassis.
cobras are a pre-approved kit car, and because they are a kit car they can be changed chassis wise (to an engineer's approval) to suit any engine. i've seen a cobra with a 427 s/c'd V8 in it, i've also seen one with an SR20DET - guess which one was harder to register? the SR. why? because the cobra has already been approved with a V8, so the chassis and mounts were changed to suit the SR and hence engineering was required. stupid, isn't it...?

my dream dato is a 1200 ute with a 454 cleveland with a BIG BloWeR

i think it'll stay that way too.
a 454 won't fit under an LJ, and that's a wider engine bay than a 1200 with no strut towers!

Thats what I'm interested in, it'll have the wow factor with relative ease and a fairly small budget. Of course i'd love a CA or similar but I have to be realistic and I've just blown all my savings on the panel and paint.

jaimecidpedro, They identify the engine by the engine numbers, ie: A12XXXX , A14XXXX, etc. They run a check on the engine number to make sure its not stolen or written off, and this tells them what car it came out of originally and its Capacity.

It is easy to fudge these things (restamp engine numbers). I reckon its just as much effort to do things the right way than to cheat the system.
jAMES.
