ALso replaced the crappy tapered roller rear wheel bearings with some ballbeaaring units. have had nothing but issues with the rear wheel bearings in this diff constantly having pay in them, even from new have 1-2mm of movement in them which with the r32 rear brakes caused the caliper pistons to be pushed apart and gives longer than normal brake pedal travel, or you pump the brakes and they come up to how they should on the second pump
basically from what i can see its just a #OOPS# setup to start with
so heres the new bearing, bearing and seal are one complete unit
and the standard setup
all ready to go
trying to figure out what bushes to run for the rear control arms
its going to be a 3 link setup, so 2 control arms and a panhard rod
the 2 control arms will look kinda like this
so they will each have 2 mounts on the diff and the front mount will go to the standard leaf mount position
going to have the main red arm and then the green arm will bolt to it
both arms will be adjustable so that the red arms control the diff location and the green arms will be able to adjust the pinion angle
so back to trying to figure out the bushes, at the moment im thinking the red arms will have rubber bushes and the green will use rod ends, mainly because both mounts on the green arms will need to be fairly small to both fit onto the red arm and to fit on the top of the diff without fitting the floor/coilovers/exhaust, they wont actually be moving during operation so them wearing out shouldn't be an issue
so the mounts in the red arms will be taking all the movement/forces from the diff, mainly thinking about the forces during acceleration. so i figure as they are the only rubber parts that should be fairly strong
the 3 mounts ive been looking at, coz they were sitting around at dads are in the pic below
top is an r31 rear upper control arm, measures 60mmx54mm diameter
middle is an 80 series landcruiser rear control arm mount, 60x55
bottom is gq patrol, not sure which arm exactly, its 50mmx60mm
r31 mount would be ideal as i have the control arm so i can use its ends to make up my new control arms, only issue i have with it is that the rubber only connects to the outer section by a 15mm strip around its diameter
so i'm not really that confident in using them when they only have such a small conection in the bush
the patrol one would be my next choice as the whole bush is solid rubber and would be more than strong enough, so im trying to chase up some patrol arms at the moment.
so ill see how i go with that, got plenty of mates with gqs but most have gotten rid of their spare or standard arms
was going to run a rubber bush on the diff end of the green arm also, but figure it will be be easier to use rod ends as then i just need a tube with left and right hand threads in it to make it adjustable
got some pics of the fuel tank and rear crossmember in the other car also. just got the mounts tacked on, going to use the standard rear tank mount in reverse, tank will bolt to the bottom of it rather than sitting ontop of it like the standard tank
and will just have some mounts welded to the back of the crossmember for the front of the tank
will probably be welding the crossmember into my actual wagon tomorrow and getting the fuel tank in
so will be cutting the standard crossmember out, cutting the fuel pump flange out of the current tank and welding it into the new one, finishing off the bracing for the chassis area where the crossmember will be welded on, remake the rear section of the exhaust so it will clear the coilovers, brace the rear fuel tank mounts
have all day tomorrow to do it, so if i start early enough i might stand a chance of driving it home tomorrow night
plan at the moment is to get the crossmember and tank in, then drive it around with the leaves still in it till the front mounts are built, will be making them so the leaves can still be bolted in, will have to just run some spacers to get the extra width with the control arm bushes
then i should be able to make up the panhard and mounts and get them in with the leaves still there
and finally make up the control arms, control arm diff mounts and diff end coilover mounts and get them all in in one go, so all up shouldnt have the car off the road for more than a couple of days
should be able to keep driving with the leaves till i have to cut the mounts off the diff
