datto 1000, how hard to fit disks
Guest_
looking seriously at a datto 1000 coupe to add to my collection, how hard to fit disk front end and also will any a series motor and gear box bolt in easily, is the a10 mounts same as a12 and gear box as well (manual of course).
it looks in good nick but unreg. if a12 in it, it will need engineers but may be worth an a15 swap if thats the case

The A12 from a Datsun 1200 [1970 to '73] will physicly bolt straight into the 1000, but the stock aircleaner usually rubs on the underside of the bonnet. A factory GX intake system fits wonderfully, but you need the oval intake port head to use it.
If you use an A14 head, it will need a small mod to allow the oil to reach the rockers as the engines from '74 were diferent.

The 1200 gearbox will also bolt straight in, but you will need the 1200 clutch cable & you need to make an adapter to mount the 1200 cable at the firewall. You may also need to do some "creative masaging" of the trans tunnel to clear the clutch arm. It's all less difficult than it sounds.

It's good to see that you are stepping up. Welcome to the exclusive 1000 group.

how hard to fit disk front end

Gday. I figured out one way to fit a disc brake front end to my old 1000 coupe, It required a fair bit of work.. I used a mix of parts, and a bit of research in the disc catalogue at www.dba.com.au.

I used:
1. Sigma calipers, and Caliper mounts. (The model which is badged a 'chrysler sigma', which has flutes in the guards.)
2. 120y rotor's mounted on 1200 stub axles. (i think.. or maybe it was 1200 rotors on 120y stub axles.. One will not fit.)
3. I got a mate to weld 2 of the holes in the caliper mounts up. I then trial fitted the calipers and rotors and re-drilled the two caliper mount holes.
4. To make the brake pads fit, I had to use an angle grinder to take a bit of the backing plate off. (Bodgey I know)

I initially had some problems with the calipers binding, and sticking on, with a bit of mucking around I got it all sorted. It took some quality time on my back at pick 'n payless to figure this all out.
James.

PS: I never had this disc swap approved by an engineer, and after searching around on the RTA website, I discovered that technically they wont approve a brake swap that requires welding\grinding brake caliper mounts. However I reckon you could get it through if you do it neatly.

James.

Jempson how did you go about fitting either 1200 or 120Y stub axles to the 1000?

i found informaton on this website a few months ago. i havn't actually made it yet,but this was kc laser rators and calipers, and is not difficult at all.
you need to remove the front drum assembly off the stub axle.
need to make a caliper mounting bracket out of some thick steel plate which bolts to the stub axle in the same way as the mounting plate from the drum brakes.
the stud holes in the laser rotors need to be made larger i believe they run the same sttud pattern though
from here you need to put it back together.
bolt the hub on then slide the brake rotors over
bolt the caliper on with pads assembled and finally a wheel.
the standard master should be fine but i think that you can use the brake hoses off the laser but am not sure on this
there was a link from this site to where i found the info maybe someone knows the site.
i dont know how legal this is but they are definently big enough disc brakes for a 1000
hope this helps

you'll want to PM dattoman1000.

he works at perth brake parts and has adapted ford laser discs onto the 1000 stubs with no mods, and then made a bracket to mount the mazda 323 calipers. he has diagrams on his website and i reckon he'd be more than happy to help.

Yep that's the one.
Hopefully the mod will be happening soon on my 1000 ute - just in time for rainy weather :0
The plan is to machine some new hubs so as to do away with having to butcher the existing ones. If you give it a few weeks he may even start selling it as a kit?? (fingers crossed)

As we speak I have had the laser cutters make me 5 pairs of brackets and I am having the holes tapped to suit the calipers.
I also have had 5 pairs of hubs turned up to suit so you don't have to do the bodgy hub mods listed on the site.
I should have it ready to rock as a bolt up kit soon once I get the parts back from the fabricators and find a supply of KC calipers.
One set is already allocated to a customer. 1 set is for my personal use. My brother may want a set for his wagon.
I therefore will soon have 2-3 sets available for sale. Prices yet undetermined.

The bodgy site is here
http://members.iinet.net.au/~dattoman_1000/white%20brakes.htm
But the setups is slightly different on the new ones.
