erratic timing point

I have a question. My datsun b210 with an A14 engine has a new carb,vaccumm hoses and plugs . the timming is correct(checked it w/timming light) but the idle is rough and the
timming mark is not steady,is jumpy. What is wrong. Could it be the timming chain? (no sound) .The head was inspected like a year ago and the car was not used that much. Help.

When I first fired up the a-14 engine that I had put in my 1200 coupe, it had the same problem that you are having..Misfiring , rough idle, jumpy timing marks when checked with timing
light, Like you, I replaced the cap, rotor,wires, some electronic ignition components,all with no improvement. I even replaced the ignition module that I found in junkyards, twice. Finally
I gave up and decided to try a points and condensor distributor from a 1974 B-210, and Viola! Problem solved. It seems to me that the problem was the ignition module, but I dont have to
worry about that anymore. It has run great and idles like a purring kitten ever since I switched a year ago.

I had this happen to me once
It turned out to be excessive wear in the distributor shaft.
Just a thought

Yeah, I thought of that, but I had checked the engine performance with 3 different electronic ign. distributors. Didnt solve the problem. Thats why I suspected the ignition module
was at fault and switched to points'n'condensor dist., but then again, I was too cheap to buy a new module. I had gotten second hand modules from the junkyard, which were all
probably bad too.

You are probably right,because I changed the pick up coil,set the air gap correctly,changed the reluctor(which is a small round metal part w/4 protrussions,in fact, one of these
protrussions (like a star fish) was broken and I thought that was it, but obviously not.Needless to say went cables,caps,rotors,but the ignition module is a transistor ignition unit,very
rare and expensive,I have not tried, but the dist shaft could also be at fault as another member is told us,so I will try another distributor ,I will go to the junk yard and get one. Wish
me luck.
