It is there to block reverse. In other words, if you have it in 5th gear it prevents you from shifting accidently into reverse. You would have to go from 5th to neutral then back to reverse. It really needs to be there.

Bugger...... I dont supose anyone has a spare one lying around ? or maybe could take some photos and give me some dimensions so i could get one made... dosent look to complicated from what i can seee from the little picture above....
Alternatively i could make myself something like this below but put a little toggle to stop the lever going to reverse... (ive seen something like that on some race car somewhere....)

Maybe a 4 speed 60a or 56a one may work and easier to come across

The shifter gate won't help. The gearbox needs that part so it won't jam internally.

Dragged out my 4 speed and that dosent have this part, and neither does my 5 speed 60L.....
Had a good look and play with it and looking through the hole i can see a bevelled tang attached to the main control rod which moves with each gear change( i think its the part called "striking lever" according to the manual)... i can almost imagine how it could work and would be able to make my own i think with the help of some pictures if anyone has this part to hand and would be kind enough to post some photo's.....

found a very interesting (if you need to learn about gearbox's) post from the Nissan 510 site, the gearbox is a bigboy 71 type, but smilarities to a 60 type...

http://www.the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=23582&start=15

it clearly shows the "tang" on the striker arm which i can see through my gearbox hole...
maybe the part from a 71 type will fit...
