My starter motor packed in finally so I rang up Repco for a price on one, thinking $70 or so dollars woudl be resaonable. They got back to me with a price of $295!!

But you know what repco stands for?

Rip Every Poor C**t Off.

Supercheap auto had starters on sale last year, I picked up a L-series one for $35

I can tell you what doesn't work now that the darn thing burnt out...

GA16DE/QG18DE starter motors from N14/15/16 Pulsars need modification to fit (relief of some external ribbing and drilling out threaded bolt hole to match the M10 shank). Thought I could get away with it for $70 but after countless cranking both with and without compression it's dying and getting too hot to crank.

yeah the 1980 Pulsar comes with a-series engine, so that will fit a 1200

Possibly the QG starter may have fit too tight on the flywheel leading to overheating. OR, since that's a small permanent-magnet starter, maybe they don't hold up to extended cranking

There were some questions in this topic
Quote:

A12/A14/A15 starters are the same. However in different years there are differences
* Mitsubishi vs Hitachi
* Starting July 1971, Automatic used high-torque (prior to that, automatics used the same starter as manuals)

1979-1980 N10 (Pulsar/310) uses an A-series engine. In 1981 N10 changed to E-series

a-series starters today and noticed that some had 8 teeth and some had 9. I thought all starters were interchangable, so does different ring gear/flywheel size on a12-a15 overcome the extra tooth
Ring gear is the same on A12,A14 and A15. Unknown what the 8-tooth gear is from. The ones I've seen are 9-tooth

And there was this report a few years ago: The (larger) Pulsar starter has a notch that wont allow them to go in the 1200. Is this due to RWD vs FWD transmissions or something else? Unknown

OK, found some more info:

* The 8-tooth starter gear is from N10 Pulsar/310 front-wheel-drive starter for A14 engine

* Found some photos of starter housing fouling on the the block (even though they bolt to the gearbox)

* The QG/GA/B14 starter is a permanent-magnet type and so they say...
-- if you knock it with a hammer you can crack the magnets
-- if it overheats it weakens the magnets
