G'day, I've started down the path of adapting a W5x gearbox to an A series to put in my coupe. I know a couple of other members have done this. I'm having trouble finding data on clutch cover (I'd call it a pressure plate) dimensions. The gearbox is off a 21r engine and if I can fit a clutch kit for a 21r that would be great. I just can't find how big the clutch cover OD is anywhere. I measure the flywheel at a bit over 270mm.

The Exedy number is TYC538 and it's fitted to heaps of different cars. One of them's a Pintara R31 with the CA20E engine. The clutch disc is 225mm.

A-series engine flywheel can take a SR20DE clutch which is 215mm

are there any W-series clutch discs that are 215mm?

200mm will work fine
Not sure you will get to 225mm
I did a Pulsar 215mm clutch on an A flywheel and that about max from memory
XT130 runs the same spline in 220mm
YN55 Hilux + YM21/30 Liteace are 215mm (TYC501)

I once got a quote for a custom twin plate with billet flywheel from Direct clutch for about $2k
Not really needed unless your over 500hp

Might pay to pop into a clutch guru for a chat

Thanks for the replies. Did you have a step machined into the flywheel to suit the pulsar clutch cover? One catalog says it's a +0.25mm step. Of course that may be different if the clutch thickness is different. The picture in the tech wiki doesn't seem to have a step for the SR20 clutch setup.

I think the best option would be to use a kit for one car and adapt the flywheel. RN40 Hilux or YN55 Hilux both seem like possible options but they have +0.5mm steps which isn't the end of the world if I'm getting it refaced anyway.

After a trip to my favourite parts shop I can confirm the Toyota clutch cover is too big. The sr20de 95 pulsar clutch cover will fit. They measured the thickness of the pulsar and rn40 hilux discs for me as well. The hilux disc is about 1.8mm thicker so it'll be a flat flywheel with shims or a spacer. See how it works out.

Neil I thinnk had a bellhousing made for the W
but are you trying to make an adapter to mate
the auto bell? W boxes shift sweeter than T series ones.

I'm doing a cut and shut, the auto bell is too long. It'll be a bit of the 21r bellhousing, a bit off the front of the a series box and a plate in between since they won't line up. I'll write it up once I've confirmed it works.

sounds very complicated but always wondered if there is some kind of thick steel
bucket, pot or cone type pipe that could be used as a bellhousing with a thicker
steel engine backing plate on one end and the box pattern on the other.
Steel is much easier to play/weld with than alloy but all a challenge I suppose.

Dattoman, did you use the sr20de pulsar clutch? Happen to know pcd on the location dowels or have a drawing for the pattern?

Long time ago
I had my engineer who does such things machine , lighten and balance the flywheel
NSC573 from memory ... so SR N14 and 1.8 N16 I think they fit
