Long time since I posted. A15 rebuild project has been on hold for quite some time. Too many projects around the house. Recently been looking at oversize pistons and carburetion. These popped up and the seller says came from a Datsun. Any ideas? Will these fit the A series engine. They are definitely not Hitachi's which have the flat dome. Don't have any pics of the inlet ports. Manifold looks too small for the L series engine. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The Datsun 1200 Hitachi setup uses rounded-dome tops, similar to your photo. The later B210 Hitachis are flat-top carbs

The manifold there kinda looks like the L-series, but somehow not? Definitely not A-series

The difference between the L16 Hitachis and the A12 Hitachs are:
* dome spring
* metering jet

Thanks DD. Didn't realize Hitachi's also had rounded domes. If I got a picture of the inlets would that help identify this setup? If the manifold is not compatible with the A series cylinder head, could I pull these carbs off and use them on a manifold that is compatible?

Yes, a photo of the intake side will help, as will a photo of the air cleaner with lid off (so we can see the carby flanges that bolt to the air cleaner

Yes, they can be used on a A-series manifold. British SUs and Hitachi side-drafts used the same mounting dimensions. Apparently the metering needles can interchange too which is good since it's hard to find the different Datsun ones


Some other interesting bits:
* Looks like 4-bolt flange carburetors. The 240Z had that type, but they are much larger than the 4-cylinder carbs (1.75 vs 1.5 throttle bores). The A14 factory twin carb setup used 4-bolt carbs, but were flat-tops -- and had traditional electric chokes out the sides

* I think some british SUs were 4-bolt type, but are less common. We have photos of these used on A14 manifold, but I don't know what car they are originally from. Maybe Volvo or MG

* that air cleaner looks factory, but not Datsun. The stampings are more intricate than any Datsun air cleaner i've seen. See Hitachi Twin Carb Air Cleaner

Manifold has round ports.Told the guy he has to pull off the other piece of the air cleaner to get a better shot of carb flange.

I thought the manifold looked familiar. I’m banking on this setup is off a Fairlady sports SRL311

Sports 2000

Yep, U20 engine manifold from a Datsun Sports 2000 (SRL311 and SR311)

It uses the larger 46mm carbs (1-3/4" compared to the 1-1/2" of the A-series and L16T engines). And they have 4-bolt flanges. Similar/same as as the 240Z

As I recall the 2000s used a simpler air cleaner than the photos here?

Appreciate that information. I'll pass on this setup. Seller got them at an estate sale where the owner never finished a project and left behind these carbs and several other boxes of Datsun parts. Has no use for them. What I found unusual was the float chambers were sitting side by side. The MG SU carbs I'm familiar with, they are on opposite ends. Might be worth seeing what else he has.

Yes, the Datsun Sports 2000 front and rear carbs have the float bowls right next to each other

From the Datsun factory parts catalog the manifold diagram exactly matches your photos
