For the past thirty years I've used Castrol 10-40 in the winter and Castrol 20-50 in the summer. Oil changed every
3000 miles. No problems.

Bottle of $30 oil?? That sure is some expensive stuff!

The local Suburu WRX fellas use Oil that's AUS$90 for 5 litres. US$45. That's a lot considering Mobil 1
Synthetic is about AUS$48.

It's a high grade synthetic, can't remember the brand. I'll use the Nissan spec oil for my car.

on the topic of oil, why is my car still blowing smoke? I thought i would have well and truely run it in by now...

Brand new A14 out of the crate (dont ask where i got it), i stripped it down to make sure i hadnt been ripped off. Everything was as it was supposed to be, all brand new. Blew
alot of smoke while it was running in, and now it still burns oil...can someone explain? the rings are all good, and the gaps are perfectly aligned, so oil shouldnt be leaking
from there...

I dunno, it's weird...my old A12 didnt blow any smoke...

Oh yeh, i'm using GTX 2...is that the problem?

I have had that problem on a Sentra E16 motor. What was going on was that I used chrome rings on old cylinders. They had been honed properly and all but for some unknown rason, they
didn't seat correctly. I had to take them out and use regular rings instead of the chrome rings. Yhis may not be your problem, though. Also check out the PCV valve, they sometimes get to
where they still work but not properly and need to be replaced.

Good Luck with it and keep us posted as to what you do to it to rectify the problem.

I have seen a few TV shows on oils. There have been many studies done using New York City taxi cabs. They have used all types of oils from parafin base, petrolium based and synthetics
and the most determed factor on oil is that nothing is better than just plain changing your oil at the proper times. Expensive oils are a yuppie thing like perrier is expensive water.

Synthetic oils have their purpose and don't get me wrong on this. If you are out a long ways from help and you are out of cooling fluid, the synthetic oils will not break down in the
extreme heat as fast as regular oil. It is proven though that synthetic oils do not make motors last any longer than regular oils. What makes a motor go more miles is the regular oil
changes. The carbon particles fron the burnt gasoline is a very hard substance and it acts like extremely fine grit that wears away at bearing and cylinder surfaces. Changing the oil
removes this carbon grit. This carbon grit is what makes your oil turn a dark color, so the color of your oil should be the most determining factor of when to change your oil, not how
many miles you go.

Thanks for the comment on the synthetic oils, Bloxhamd. Your research had a lot different results than PBS
(Public Broadcasting System).

ok im not sure why im getting into this one but... :) man seriously a million miles? on the same 40 litres that went in at the engines second oil change? i know for a fact that ships run the
same sump of oil for the life of the ships engine service life, but there is a lot more oil and there is no dust ect out at sea, and a truck has a much more varying load on its engine and is
driven in much harsher conditions than a ships engine, examples are, a truck has a turbocharger or supercharger unit that puts more thermal stress on the oil, a trucks diesel engine has a
much higher rpm than a ships, and also variables like cold start up have to be taken into account, a ships engine oil is pre heated before it is started, where as a truck is started from
cold at least 2 times a week, so therefore a ship has everything going for it when it comes to keeping its oil for its service life, where as a trucks diesel has a lot going against it. ok a
boiler service company, whos owner my father grew up with and i have know for my life had 3 toyota hilux utes, diesel (non turbo) 2Y engines from memory, 2 were fitted with a special remote
filter system and there other was left stock standard and serviced by toyota new zealand every 5000kms, (and that was a 5000kms oil change and filter and oil at 10,000kms ect type interval)
the other 2 utes were kitted out with the filter system and run on Amsol fully synthetic diesel engine oil, and these engines were serviced every 6 months regardless of the fact that they
covered over 40-50,000 kms in that 6 month period, surprise surprise after just 150,000 kms one of the utes running the synthetic system siezed and broke a crank on a cold morning, as it was
proven the synthetic oil thickened with the contaminants and started sludging blocking the filter and the screen and you all know what happens next. the second ute run on that system was
last visit at just over 800,000 kms and the ute run on dealer recomended service intervals is approaching 700,000kms, sorry about all the extra info but im just trying to point out that
there is no possible way that an engine can run the same oil for 1,000,000 kms tested or not, 10%topped up or not. rugular servicing is the only way, be it 6 months with synthetic or
10,00kms with mineral. but i belive that that is not the true answer to the question origionly asked which was "so i think i wasted $30 so help please" ok if you would normally only pay $12
for your oil then no you didnt waste $30 you wasted $18.
choice from chris
