It's a valve cover breather, the hot oil fumes get "recycled" back into the intake to reduce emissions that are bad for the environment.. If you have the standard air filter and carburettor, then retain it. If you have custom carbies, then it may be better to just put a filter over the end to stop oil going all over your engine bay. But it should be routed back to before the throttlebody (carby butterfly).

i have a weber 32/36 dgav and the rocker cover has a breather filter on it, i have just changed my filter system and there is a hose that runs from the filter to a bit of metal pipe that juts out from the block just before the bellhousing

That's the crankcase breather. It connects via a PCV to after the throttle butterfly.

If you want a good idle, copy the factory routing for the hoses.

I hope this helps.

That's the crankcase ventilation hose. As Dattodude says, it should be connected to the PCV valve, which screws into the intake manifold just below the carb. On the other hand, the rocker cover is connected to air cleaner.

what happens if you dont have this hose?
On mine the crankcase breather has nothing over it and the hole in the intake manifold is plugged.

You don't have a vaccuum in the sump(slight loss of power). But number 4 spark plug and combustion chamber shouldn't oil up!

ok the whole story is that i had to change my air filter over because someone had made a sketchy one my carby is a 32/36 dgav weber now, crankcase breather (thanks fo the help identifying) had a hose that attached to the air filter, my new ramflow air filter does have a hole and a connecting fitting for this but now the hose doesnt reach, someone mentioned that it should lead to the manifold that doesnt surprise me beacuse its been blocked with screws so if someone can explain what this valve i need is and which hole it should go to i would be extremely happy
thanks for the loads of help
curtis

Go to the wreckers and raid a 120Y. If the wrecking yard doesn't let you pull your own parts from the wrecks..then walk away..

Basically, hose from crankcase pipe to pcv in manifold, and hose from rocker cover to air filter. Get the hose clamps, and just do it.

Simple
