I have been running an H-150 with (poorly) welded spyder gears for several years behind a Z-20 engine that I estimate makes around 165 to 170 horsepower. In fact, it was my daily driver for quite a while. I know the car saw some hard use while it was "on loan" at a friend's race shop a few years back and it seemes to have held up fine. I guess what I'm saying is, the H-165 should be more than adequate.

Hi,

In my B110 4 door, I used a Ute (B120) diff for 3 years and never had a problem. Also never had more than 100kW at the wheels either. That could be why it never broke.

My latest rebuild is aiming for 200kW at the wheels and I've upgraded to a VL Commodore Diff.
The conversion requires a fair bit of thought. Converting my front 180B hubs to Commodore bolt pattern is yet to be resolved. It'll require new hubs.

I'm also converting to 4 link rear suspension. Took some photos last night. Will try to post them in the next day or so.

Chris

Hi chris will be interesting to see how your rear end turns out. The 1200 ute diff are pretty good for around 180hp depending also on how its driven. the axles seem to be the week link and hard to find. I have had several diferent types of diffs in my dattos over the years a RX2 diff behind the Jport 1200 ute. A 1200 ute diff with TRX discs behind the 1200 rally car project (never completed)& sold off and now the mitsibishi behind the CA18 turbo. I was going to go H190 LSd with alloy housing (1500 ute) and may still if money and time permits.
Cheers Andrew.
PS: congrats on becoming an uncle

hey andrew,

just a quick question.

You ever take your ute down the quarter? What sort of times did you pull with the J-port?

coz in the near future my plans for a rota powered 1000 are starting. We're starting off with a 12a in a 1000 coupe, and if all goes ok, it will then have a 13b J, or even peripheral port. Dunno if it'll be streetable with the 13b though....hmmm....12a is ok though...

Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh! Not another rotary 1200! I won't go on a tirade. I just wanted to voice my lack of support. Do what you want though, they are fast.

ahhhhhhh shhhhhh!

is that any worse than putting a CA in it? seiously? Are you against it because its been done so many times, or because it's a rotary?

I know you've read my other post about the turbo A-series, so whats the problem? It's not like i'm turning pro-rotary or anything, i used to hate them. But the truth is, they ARE good engines. They may not last very long, but c'mon, a standard 12a comes out with 140hp.

If it doesnt work out, or it costs too much money to keep that thing running, then i will abandon it, and probably put a CA in it or something.

You should be glad i'm doing it to a datto, and not a VW or something!

-Jesse

PS. and it's a 1000, not a 1200...

I never had a chance to take it down the quarter it was pretty quick an estimate would be low 13's high 12's it had around 260hp at the engine with 48mm webber. The best thing I could have done was sold it as it was noisy, thirsty and constantly got the wrong attention from the police. These days I prefer to stick with the type of engines that cam out in them Example nissan into datsun nice quite reliable and heaps of grunt.
Cheers Andrew

I have nothing against the rotary engine, they are very good powerplants. My issues are that it has been done to death and I, personally, don't like the idea of putting a non-Nissan engine in a 1200. Once again, don't mind me, I'm just spouting my opinion. They are wicked fast, I just think with some development a Nissan engine could be made to be as fast or faster. As I said the last time I made this tirade, "sure they are fast, but so would strapping on a JATO rocket engine!" Damn, you got me started again!

Hey Dimlight, I feel a little guilty putting non Datsun/Nissan engines in Dattos now too. But having owned 3 rotang powered ones over the years I know the reason for the attraction to the rotary. They are small , light, and pack a big punch for low bucks and they can take a hammering in the revs department. They also don't alter the great handling traits of the 1200s. When I was 17 /18 this was just what I needed in an engine. As you have dicovered building a turbo 4 can get really expensive especially when you get into the computers and all the trick stuff. I am a points and carbs kinda guy and the simplicity of the rotary also appeals. I guess I have the best of both worlds with rotary and A series engined 1200s in my garage. Very soon I hope to reveal the twin cam A series I now have and I'll end up replacing the 12A in the race car with it, then maybe my sins shall be forgiven........
