what may replace the 1200 ???

hello everybody
i've been thinkin about this for a while now and have come to no major conclusion and feel it time to throw it open to you lot

what car/cars of recent years match the 1200's and 1000's of 30+ years ago for options, models, reliability, and class ??? and in 30 or so years do you think any of these recent cars will have the cult following that 1200's and 1000's do today ?????

for sure it would have to be silvias they have a huge following and i think will continue to do so due to be such well design cars plenty of features and now heaps of bolt on mods.

My next car will be a S15 silvia as it is said to be the last turbo rear will drive silvia that nissan will produce so i believe this is will have a huge following and thats why im hunting for one for myself.

I always expected the early shape RX7 to take over from the 1600 as the boy racers weapon of choice,but that hasnt happened.

The 1600 following is as strong as ever and newer jap imports have made the old RX7s a bit redundant.

There is now more choice, with more performance, at cheaper prices than we have ever seen.

the S13's i reckon will always have a following, but probably the king of the hill would have to be the r32 GTR. awesome machine all round, made by nissan to race (as opposed to the R33 and R34) and win (kicking holden and ford ass without a problem) before they were banned from the series. i'd buy one

My initial response is that due to the fact that the engineering world is so focused on "fitness for purpose" these days, that the over-engineering of bygone days that has allowed for these options, reliability etc, has just about disapeared.....
As much as I hate to say it though - It certainly seems like the old Hyundai Excel is becoming very popular with the boy-racers due to them being cheap to buy & tart up...... As for class, well I'll let you make up your own mind on that one & it seems as though it's quantity not quality for that particular model (in my opinion anyway).
I can see it now "Excel Clubman Series".

Lagwagon Im a huge R32 fan but they didnt kick ford and holden ass conclusively. I saw the VL Group A driven by Gricey go straight past the R32 GTR on Conrod in the 1990 Bathurst. And Johnsons Sierra was a very quick car on half the 600,000 Gibson Motorsport budget the Winfield GTR had....
The R32 will be the cult car for sure....and I will have one in my collection

the skylines/silvias, i think will definitly have be up there for years to come, but there really is no 'small' car that even comes close ???
for sure i can see the quantity not quality theory coming form the manufacturers, especially in this time of disposable everything, and loath the day the gemini of the '90s may get it's own clubman series......

but will the silvia's and skylines last 30 years???

they are somewhat cheap performers so to speak nowdays...

but they will become expensive to repair...

unlike a 1200

Nothing will ever actually 'replace' our little Datsuns, but some other cars may get their day in the sun for a while.

Things like the Hyunai's may be popular for a while as they are readily available, cheaply, in good condition, but i don't think that anyone buys them for their classic style & timeless apeal. Nor do they have an historic legacy like our Datsuns do. The range of body styles is somewhat limited too.
Lets face it, the're just another Kelvinator.

I can't think of another car in the last 20 years, in the price class of our Datsuns, that has what it takes to join their ranks as minor classics.
A replacement for our B10 /B110 & even the B210? Not anytime soon.
