Hi all

I am planning on upgrading my shock absorbers. I can get custom made ajustable shock absorbers for the rears, not Koni's, as Koni don't make ajustables for the sedan's rear.
I did not find out yet about the front.
I don't think ajustables are required for the front. My problem is that the rear shocks must be removed if I want to ajust them.
Does the Koni's for the coupe's also work that way?

Ive got adjustable coupe konis for the rear of my sedan you have to lower the bottom shock mount to stop the shock bottoming out. yes they adjust by compressing the shock then turning either way for firmer/softer. There are kyb ajx (i think that what they are called) shocks that have a adjusting knob at the base of the shock, i dont know if they are worth looking into but really you cant go past a set of konis. Why wouldnt you have adj on the front only on the rear???

Does yours bottom out because you are using coupe shocks?
I do not want to modify my shock mounts.

The company here manufacture for racers locally shocks with 2 years guarentee.
The guys informed me that they make it precisely the same as normal shocks. They will look like normal sedan shocks, but I will have ajustability of the following.
Normal road use, Fast road and then full race.
He said I must remove the shock, compress it fully and then click it onto the desirable setting. I presume the same way as Koni's.

The shocks are quite expensive, that is why I do not want to put ajustables on the front aswell.
Through reading previous threads I got the idea that the rear is the problem. Front I can use normal gas riders or something. Any advice appreciated to get better handling for fast road use on twisty roads.

Like someone informed me once "think twice, act once".

At the moment they are still in the box, ive just gone by what i was told by the guy who sold them. He said i can just use coupe lower shock mounts which are part of the leaf assmbly not the diff housing as on a sedan. Adjustment is the same as what your talking except far more than 3 settings, there is no click you just choose 1.5 turns from closed or 2 turns from closed and so on. With the konis you only have to remove the bolt from the bottom of the shock adjust then bolt back on takes prob couple minutes per side depending if you have access to air tools, i love air!

Ok dirts I'll tell you what I use : Tokico green's in the front (non adjustable) and Koni's in the rear. To adjust those as siad you undo the bottom bolt then bottom the shocks and spin them...rebolt.
Now the word of caution:
you really do not need adjustable shocks for a road car unless it goes to track days where you are using sticky tires. I can say almost 95% of the students I instruct at track days who have adjustable suspension have things waaaaay to stiff. This happens because stiff shocks give the car an instant feeedback so it "feels" good. The problem is the tires are breaking away a lot earlier then they would with a soft set-up. With the car set up that feels a little soft the tires will stay planted on the road there by increasing traction. The biggie is most people don't understand compression , rebound , high and low speed damping enough that they should be messing with adjustments.
Most people are surpised with how well our coupe rides at speed and the fact that as I go pounding over the FIA kerbing it doesn't upset the car.
When we first went racing we used plain old Monroe gas shocks which worked ok with our cut 240Z springs on the front and the stock rear springs. When I put on Nismo stuff we upgraded to the Tokico and Konis. To further add to this point one of the USA's leading builders of tube frame GT cars uses non adjutable shocks for his old 510; springs and shocks are matched becuase he is busy with customers trackside he just wants a well set-up car that needs no fiddling. (guess where I bought my current suspension)
So for you I would say just buy a good qaulity gas shock that matches the springs rates. For street use I always use KYB's the price is right and they do a good job for a street car , decent ride but still work well on the twisty bits.

We currently use Koni adjustable race shocks for the rear of the coupe (we altered the mounts to take them) and KYB inserts in the front (they were really the only inserts available for the original struts).
We are currently building a set of Skyline 31 struts for the front of the coupe and will use Konis in those
The car runs in the Improved Prodution class here (circuit racing) and has lots of other mods re suspension to get it to handle.
If you check out http://racepics.org/ipqr1105.htm you will see the attitudes of wheels and car here (bright yellow coupe)

We have just installed some Custom made Noltec Grunt adjustable shocks in the front of the Sunny, in the rear we use adjustable Spax.

everything is custom though to fit - we cut the original strut tubes off and replaced them - inserts are to suit a late model Commodore. Rears have the lower shock mount relocated to suit also.

I'm using Koni in both my coupes, with the racecar having the standard adjustables converted to coilovers.

Once the sedan is finished. In a few months i hope. (fingers crossed) It will be running Pedders in the front and havent decided on the rear yet. Still has 2000km old monroes in there that will stay until the rest of the car is sorted.

Anyway i hear mixed reports about pedders. Some say fantastic whilst others say they arent worth a pinch of salt. Id say they'll be a great improvement over monroes and the cheap KYBs. I hope so any way for the price i paid for them. Still cheaper than konis.

Ill let everyone know once it hits the track.

Maybe I must then just search for the best quality possible normal road use shocks.

Thanks rallytwit.
Your reply was actually what I was looking for. What I pay for 4 normal road use shocks, I will pay for only one of these ajustable shocks I can get.
So I think I will not get the full potential of the ajustable shocks as we do not have a track here where I live.

I will look into gas riders, if possible, all round.
Don't know if gas filled shocks are available for our sedans.

How good are Monroe's?
I heard they joined with Armstrong shocks.
In South Africa we have Monroe, Armstrong and Gabriel. According to my dad he reccomends Monroe or Gabriel.
