Hi Guys, I have a 1200 deluxe and i want to fit on a set of 17" rims. Have seen the tech section and the post about changing the strut to stanza ones. Will this help me fit the 17's in and if so wat other mods will I have to do regarding ball joint mounting bolts etc? I am looking for the most cost effective way of doing this. Any advice will be appreciated. Also wat can I do to assist with the fitment at the rear.

Hi Sid.

Getting 17's under a 1200 is a mission by all accounts- (from other's posts) it will require plenty of panel work on the inside of the wheel arch (cabin firewall) and flaring. there should be plenty of info & pics if you search the archives.

15's or 16's are a bit easier. either way, sunny struts are probably easier than stanza's if you are going for big rims, but then you don't get the good brakes unless you bolt alternative disks & calipers on.

You will need to do your sums and get the offsets spot on for both front and rear.

Yeah, 17s fit, but you'll be looking at $700 - $1000/corner for wheels/tyres (very low profile) + flaring guards + inner guard mods requiring cutting, welding and respray.

To give you an idea, standard diameter is about 550mm, and 17x40 series are about 606mm to 630mm that's 25mm larger, and even at 6 inch this is a massive scrub radius difference.

You would have to run 205 width if you ran 17s, and most likely 40 series or less. You can prety much only buy Nankangs for that size, they aren't much good except for pushing on and off a trailer

17s are a losing battle on a 1200. I'm struggling with 15s to get maximum width, and a decent quality tyre.

If its any help, I'm looking into 16" on stanza struts.
Tyres would be 205/45 R16 which are the same diameter as 195/60 R14 = 590mm. A 195/60 R14 on a stanza strut with the average alloy wheel gives 3mm of tyre/strut clearance. I have my "tyre dude" looking into 16" wheel offset at the moment to see what would be available and how much fender protrusion (Spelling?...its late and I should be in bed by now) we will end up with using the 205 16's.

As a coparison, I'm using 195/60 R14's which clear everything without mods and the car sits at 505mm to the bottom of the headlight ( 5mm above legal hight)
J.

I think you will find that running over a 195 on stanza or sunny struts will require a spacer or adapter plate plus guard flairing.
15 inch rims are probably the biggest you'd want to go for practicality.
You can get 195/50/15 tyres under with out drama and they are relatively cheap, starting at around 90 bucks for the cheap ones.
Also 195 is about as big as you can go on the rear without scrubbing the leaf springs.

lowering the car will always require guard massaging for anything equal to or above a 14x7 rim...espacially if you fit stanza struts
