Who can tell me how much power a 60A or 60L 5 speed can handle.

Obviously more than a stock 1200 4 banger and less than a L series box but how much?

It tends to be the torque that kills the A-series gearboxes and not necessarily the power.

Yes, gearboxes are rated for torque. Horsepower is meaningless in this context. Torque is the twisting force that breaks parts.

60-series gearbox can reliably handle approximately 135 lb. ft. torque

You'd need a bit of power to break a 60. I had one behind my A15, and I did some pretty unkind things to it.

Thanks guys. I just have reservations on which way to go for the engine. I love the cammy idle but I love the brute force of the turbo. Naturally asperated I am confident that I will not go too hard onthe car but with a turbo I might have a little too much fun on the DECA day if I ever make it there.

I have now aquired 2 60 series 5 speeds. A 60A and a 60L. I bought the 60L last night and I can't believe that it was sdvertised in the trading post for over a week with barely a call for $440. I got it for $400 although it needs new bearings.

Not that it really matters now anyway. I am almost broke and I have wasted my dosh as usual on the least important things so it looks like I will be having to sell a few bits and pieces to keep the project alive. Is there anyone in the market for a L18 W short motor. Or a C210 skyline 5 speed?. Mabey a tanderm trailer? 2 kids? Half a bottle of butterscotch schnapps?

I've had both 60l's & 60a's in front of some strong motors & never broke the gears, etc. What i did break was the shifting pins, usually on second gear. I'd recommend the dogleg first box, because the internals seemed to be better material than the later box.A 63a box would laugh at anything you could do. They used this box in the 200B SSS.
