hey all, i have a stupid and simple question, i am new to the world of performance cars and was wondering how much more fuel a turbo car uses then its non turbo equal (eg. ca18 to
ca18det)
i know the workings of a turbo and realise that it pushes more air into the cylinder therefor more fuel is required but want to kjnow how much more fuel. sorry if im blubbering on but
thats what a few beers will do to ya, cheers all

For a given amount of HP, you need a given amount of fuel and air. Doesn't matter if
it's a turbo
or not.

A CA18 making 150hp needs the same amount of fuel as a CA18DET making 150hp.

A forced injection engine will be more efficient than a NA engine. The efficiency is directly related to the compression ratio, so when your boost guage reads above zero
psi, the compression is up. But U have to run better fuel to avoid pre ignition.

The turbo is more efficient, but U will definatly use more fuel because U will give it the herbs more often.

Yep all this sounds right.
My experience is this. On Highway driving my old CA18DE got the same fuel economy as the stock A14. The CA18DET (driven carefully) gets about the same as the CA18DE. It get's better fuel
economy due to lower compression off boost, but gets worse fuel economy on boost, but you get more power. But if you are an adrenalin junky who likes to live 'on boost' then expect 30%-
50% higher fuel costs. But you get %100+ power improvement, and normal people don't like driving crazy all the time, with the risk of police fines. I really like having a turbo. Having
easy cold starts and nice idling, and plenty of power when you want it, but I do still see the attraction of a fully worked twin weber monster motor...the sound and rough idle....the
good ol' days...

I get 30 miles per gallon out of My CA18det on a trip when giving it heaps it uses heaps for instance I drove to eastern creek from mudgee (230km) and used 20ltrs of fuel :0 I
did a supersprint 16 laps at around 2km a lap say 50km's max and used 30 lts :) It was lots of fun as you can imagine.
