i have never really had anything to do with welding and have no idea what im looking for but in the near future i will have to try and find a cheapish welder even if its 2nd hand.

so what do people recommend for welding thin datsun steel?

I am also in the market for a MIG welder

From my research the best ones (single phase) seem to be the Lincoln 180 or a Kemppi at about the same ampage. If you can pick one upo for under $750 AU then you are doing well.
there are a lot of really cheap ones out there thoug. Key things to look for are the ability to adjust the power down to do light work and high enough for general use.
Also make sure you get Gas/Gasless option and try to get one that takes 15KG spools (more economical to buy).

about a 200amp mig works well for most stuff

for smaller stuff you need the adjustability. i use a MIGOMAG 200C, it only has 6 settings but it welds panel steel fine and also welds diff housings and stuff together

I have a Boss 255amp mig welder and a Boss 200amp acdc tig... the mig welder is awesome and goes low enough to do sheet work, has the balls to do thick work also... the migimag units are good also, my old man has one at the workshop.

I have a weld master, it was heaps cheaper than all the others like cig, migomag, ect when i bought it.
Had it a few years now still going well, I do a heap of datsun stuff with it and some fab work too.
Just another option.

I have a unimig 250A Trade series, with seperate wire feed, 15kg spool. can pulse weld, spot weld etc etc etc. the seperate wire feed for me is fantastic, as it has a 10m lines on it so you can throw the welder around the corner and its outta the way and no noise :) I have only heard good things about the lincoln 180's. A mate has one, seems to be pretty good for welding up datto's and patios :)

best piece of equipment I ever invested in!

picked it up second hand for a fraction of the cost. :)

Have to agree Bailz, the Unimig trade series are very good. I bought mine about 7 years ago. Never had a problem.

I went with a recomendation of a local truck trailer manufacturer who has had 6 of them for years without fault after years of dramas with WIA welders.

If i was to upgrade now, the newest migs are inverter technology and would be my choice if buying new.

MigoMag, Kempi, Unimig workshop series(not procraft series) are top welders.

I`d recomend buying a second hand, low milage unit over buying a new less known brand. Dont even think about gasless.

If your budget will allow, go for a new big brand inverter mig. these will make the worst opperator look good!
