Ok so have just been looking into shortening my 180b diff and installing the topgear H165 lsd unit.........Fail, it wont work.

Here is the original build thread that contained some great advice from Dogeman, D and burt, sorry guys but i kinda forgot some of this advice as it has been a while since i've thought about this conversion.
Kue1000 Buildup

so as dogeman reported I did have problems shortening the axles from the 180 diff, they step down in diameter right after the spline and are too small to respline, back to the drawing board!

I would still like to use the lsd! as D mentioned the 67 bluey might be long enough to be able to shorten the axels while still using the H165 LSD

Or

I could try and find some other axles that dont step down and use those instead, in the 180b housing with the H165 centre

The diff shortening guy suggested R31 rear end as they're cheap and easy to shorten, but I'm running 13" wheels so wasnt sure if they had discs and if they would clear and also I already have the H165 carrier and LSD so would like to use them if possible

Anyone had any experience with this?

Cheers

The 180b wagon diff you are talking about a h165?
I think the safest way is to find a h165 bluebird s2 with the cast iron centre
h165 and either 4.11 or the rare stanza like 3.7 centre.
surely you can swap the 180b centre bits?

Why not just use a 1200 ute rear axle assembly and negative offset (FWD) wheels?

Cheers guys,

D - yep the 180b diff is a H165 the problem is in the shortening of it, with the axle diameter just after the spline being too small to machine splines onto.
So the bluebirds were a lot wider than the 180b's? i cant seem to find the track measurements anywhere, which is what i need so that even if the axle does reduce in size after the splines it wont matter as i'll be cutting behind that point anyway.

ddgonzal - I already have new superlites and toyo R888's on the car that have the right offset for the standard diff

can u use ute 1200 h165 axles? or same problem?
otherwise go the whole hog and use h190 tube ends, bearings and axles
machined down to fit into the h165. Would be much stronger and cheaper
than shortening 1200 ute axles which are rare.

Ok i'm looking into using H190 axles/bearings ect..

If anyone in perth has any I'm keen to buy or if your not keen to sell maybe borrow just so i can check that everything will work,

Otherwise I'd be willing to swap a topgear-H165 lsd unit for a H190 LSD unit,

did some more reading on the R31 diff and it would be much easier but minimum wheel size is 14" Doh!

Ben

You can stuff 13" rims over the r31 rear end. Just.
My watanbes fit over and they are 13x6" rims

Some people have reported that you will need to gind down flat the cooling fins and stuff, but 13" will fit.. just.
