See Illumination Control for wiring and operation.
In response to proposed government legislation, illuminated knobs were developed and first available as an option in 1970. When the light switch is turned on, the knob glow pale green to let you know the location of the knobs. This uses fiberscope technology, where light from a bulb is transmitted via fiber optic cable to the knob itself. It became standard in 1973 USA models.
Light Switch and Wiper Switch both have illuminated versions. Note the fibre cable hanging off the back of the wiper switch

North America
Because government regulation FMVSS 101 required it as of September 1972, 1973 USA models used illuminated Sunny style knobs but with Text
H70 Type: Green knob with words and illumination (B210 also uses this as standard fitment) except for the headlight switch.
1973 USA government FMVSS legislation required:

- identification of essential controls and displays must be illuminated whenever the headlamps are lit (Except for foot-operated controls or manually operated controls mounted on the steering column)
1973 Datsun 620 truck is similar, but uses Laurel-style knobs with Text
