Got the head & cam back in the last 2 weeks so its been all go in the shed. Dialed the cam in fine, didnt get it DEAD on but was about 5 degrees advanced. The head got a service, water galleries pluged up and new double valve springs for the higher lifting cam (needs more tension).
The twin 40's and Datrat extractors complete the A series package me thinks...

DD, 1. No matter how many times i tried, i couldnt get the cam COMPLETELY dead on target to the specs i was given. @ TDC in was supposed to be 52 thou and Ex 47 thou, i got In to round about 47 thou and Ex bout 43 i think from memory.
Its was a combination of things, new rollermaster chain (no give AT all), no fully adjustable cam sprocket and lack of paitence! I need to get this engine going and at the expense of a tiny bit of loss in top end power (which i wont be reving the tits off it anyway) it doesnt bother me that much!

My cam specs are advertised duration in - 276 Deg; Ex - 281 Deg
Cam lift is In - 265 thou and ex 262 thou. Dont know valve lift but you can figure it out with the rocker ratio ( i dont know how to tho!)
Its a milder cam compared to my 316 Deg last one! But has more lift which is exactly what i wanted.

Its more a 'warm' A series than a massive hottie

Cheers
Dave

So it was supposed to be set at .052" @ TDC and you have it set to .047" @ TDC?

That is actually retarding the cam timing, not ideal for a 'mild street' engine running twin side drafts.

The easiest way to get the correct cam timing if you don't have a vernier gear is to set the piston at TDC, turn the cam until you get the required lift @ TDC then fit the gears and chain without fitting the cam dowel pin. Make sure the cam gear dowel hole is almost opposite the original hole in the cam.

The grab a drill the same size as the existing hole in the cam, or a size smaller, and drill a new hole in the cam using the hole in the cam gear as a pilot.

Once this is done just fit the dowel to the cam, and away you go.

Be sure to recheck the cam timing once you've finished.

The only way to do this is with adjustable sprockets or an offset key. You can also just modify your stock sprockets.

If you don't modify it, you are not dialing it in ... 5 degrees is a lot, I think factory specs are like + or - 2 degrees?

The PCV system will be hooked up to a catch can soon, ill go with a dodgy coke can first then invest in a nice stainless steel one down the track.
Gota spray the rocker cover again, getting tacky and fading. Think red might set if off nicley! Also must figure out the linkages to the throttle cable this week.
The engine SHOULD be goin in thursday night hopefully!

Any comments/suggestions welcome

Cheers
Dave

Any particular reason you are running the cam 5 degrees advanced? If I remember correctly it should give you more low-speed power at the expense of top-end power.
