Changing your profile by 10% doesn't seem like a big deal to me (the uneducated). My main worry would be insurance. If you do certain mods to your car your insurance company may not be able to insure your car.
It must always be street legal . The risk is too high otherwise. (That's my opinion )

Can anyone tell me if going from a 70 profile to a 60 will throw my speedo out by much?

As you probably already know, the profile is a percentage of the section width of the tyre. The thing to look out for the is the rolling circumfrence of the tyre, and how it differs from the rolling circumfrence of the factory issued original. if the numbers are too different then your speedo read either too fast or too slow.

this may be a handy tool to compare sizes.

My last knowledge of the DOT regs was
You can change OD but within limits
You are allowed to increase OD by 15mm
You are allowed to decrease OD by 25mm

At least that was the case when I was a tyre shop Manager. (back about 4 yrs now)

If you can get 185/65 or 185/60 do that, odds are that your speedo isnt exactly right anyway

I'm getting new tyres tomorrow!! Yay (Thursday)
They r 185/60 R14. They're 'only' Sava's, but anything is an improvement on what is on the ute at the momemt.....One of my front tyres is a 13" and the rest are 14's. Oh yeah they're all bald too.

a 175/50*13 will look ridiculously small on a 1200. Not to mention making your speedo out by about 13%! That's like changing from a 3.9 to a 4.4 diff! Its a massive gearing change. Nice on a Mini though.

I wouldn't go smaller than a 185/60*13 or 215/50*13 on a 1200/120Y

175/70, 185/65 & 205/60 are the right sizes for a 13" tyre on a 1200/120Y but the 205/60 will often will foul the gaurds.

correct fitments in larger diametres are 185/60*14 and 195/50*15.

185x60x13 is a good size for the front of our small Datsuns. These are a nominal 552mm diameter which approximates the original 165x12" radial, but I prefer something a little meatier in the rear & the original 600x12" cross ply tyre measured about 575mm in diameter, so a 195x60x13 comes close, but if you can get a 205x60x13 under the rear without problems, & I did under a 1000, then this will give you a little rubber 'rake', good front clearance & better [than stock] overall gearing for road use.
