Hey there,

Bit of a sob story for you guys. I recently purchased som tie rods from a member on here from a sunny wagon. Only trouble was that the inner and outer tie rod ends were still atached and as i didn't need these bits, i attempted this morning to take them off.

Now i'm not sure if anyone on here has attempted to take the ends off before when they have probably been attached to the vehicle and the same tie rods for 20-30 years but do not put the rods in a vice to hold them in place!!!! The metal is soft and it strips the #### out of the thread on the rod!!!

As you would have proabbaly already guessed, i have just learnt this the hard way this morning and it has rendered the tie rods i have virtually unusable.

Now what i want to ask you guys is instead of having to hunt around for another decent set to complete my strut conversion, what is stopping me from making my own. Would be piss easy as i could just buy a length of rod the same width from the hardware store, cut them to size, thread them then use the bolts from my current tie rods to hold on the ends.

Has anyone done this before and if not, can you guys forsee any issues that i may encounter or reasons i should steer clear of doing this?

Alternatively if anyone has any sunny tie rods (please just the tie rods, no ends ) that are in a decent condition and that i could possibly purchase from them, please let me know.

Thanks
Trav

yeah that's not unheard of to make your own threaded rod bits. When you happen to increase the cars track width however the issue of how long the rod is becomes apparent. Some people make their threaded rod piece with a nice big spanner friendly peice in the middle of it so you'll never have the problem again

with the amount of stanza tierods around id say you should just find some ready made ones

dont know how the strength of the thread would be compared to the standard ones....not really a thread you want to strip
and the left hand thread tap wouldnt be a common peice of equiptment

Hey there piggy,

Having thought about it this arvo and chatting to my missus' uncle who was gonna make them for me, i'm thinking of just finding some sunny/stanza ready made ones. Can't be too hard!!!

Cheers
Trav

i think its easy enough to do, however wat will stop u in your tracks is when u go to buy a left hand thread die..now i havent ever price one up but i think there big dollars, sound stupid i know yet ive seen $200 difference in parts ie balljoints/tierod and the only difference between these parts are the different thread. i could be wrong but just a heads up go price one before taking the make ur own route.

Supposedly so. Different length i believe.

Or at least that was the reason i was told to buy them in the first place. Didn't really question it though cause i don't want to come to fit the struts in and discover that the only thing holding me back was that the standard 1200 tie rods were too short. Would probably P me off more than i am right now at the thought of forking out more $$$ for a stupid length of rod with a couple of bolts on each end!!!
