Folks

Planning on going down to pick a part soon to get an r31 diff housing (disc to disc) and was wondering if there is any way that you can identify which ratio or if its LSD or not without pulling the back cover off?

manual skylines are 3.7:1
autos are 3.9:1
manual pintara is 3.9:1
auto is 4.1:1

something like that
if its an LSD it should have a tag on the filler plug saying that it had an LSD

silhouettes and i think gts 2s are the only ones with LSDs standard, i know silhouettes do and im pretty sure there is another model that does also, and im thinking GTS2 as they were the most powerful of the r31s

Cheers pigdog
and just one more question quickly, what would be a reasonable price to pay for a complete diff disc to disc, in reasonable condition. ie what you would expect for a 20 year old diff?

most wreckers i know would charge $200 for a complete diff.....usually doesnt matter what sort it is

so if you have all the right tools you should swap the stock open skyline centre for a falcon 28 spline LSD, if you have enough time to be doing diff centre swaps at the wreckers

what!!!

Thats gotta suck.. ahh well, its now going to be a matter of ratting around for those older parts.

On an upnote, I didnt end up going to pick a part. I called a friend of a friend, and he had a r31 skyline LSD complete sitting out the back of his now closed wrecking yard! and he only sold it to as a favour of my friend!!

Every wrecker I called (about 15) didnt have anything except the previously mentioned $800 open centre, and pick a part didnt know if they had any diff housings, but said that they had r31s in stock.

at the end of the day, im happy with the find, and the price was reasonable for such a rare diff, and I now have a diff to drop off to Beattie for the bulk job he is organising......

beattie I throw some beer your way if your arm needs twisting...

yeah rock1200, thats correct as far as I know. Pigdog is the guru there.

Remember that some commodores and falcons used the same diff centre, so you could possibly just get an open centre unit, and swap the diff centres in i think.

edit : Something that I forgot to add about these diffs, is that only the skyline Silouhette came with LSD. The GTS2, apart from bieng an import and even rarer than the Silouhette, it wasnt live axle rear end. It was a IRS setup, or at least thats what the dude that I spoke to about them said yesterday, and I trust what he says.
