hey guys just bought another datto, a 1000 coupe which i havent picked up yet, its all stripped with pretty much new every thing but i was thinking of turbo ing the a14 that it has and was just wondering how much room is there behind the grill to fit a small intercooler also how will the diff cope with a turboed a series?

Reguarding the diff, depends how much torque you propose on making. Is it just for the street, and how had do you drive?

The intercooler... If you put a thermo fan infront of the radiator and take the normal fan off, it gives you about 2 1/2 inches of room. There is also room in front of the radiator, but behind the grille. Not too much though. What I would probably do is really strengthen the front panel and remove the battery and widen the radiator 'hole' part so they could sit inbetween, giving you the most options.

cheers

edit: or move the engine back

edit twice: can we see pics

well it will be set up for street and ocasionall race also i drive resonably hard so would it be woirth while shortening a ute diff ? also thanks for the advice i guess i will have to decied when i get to that part lol i can takes pics in a week or two as thats when i get the car but it is just a rolling shell bare metal which needs to be painted so nothing special but i am expecting the engine to be pretty torque as every thing for it is brand new with bigger pistons and so on also aiming to inject it be will see how funds go

yes but would skyline be over kill for a little 1000 coupe with an turboed a14? what have other people done for the rear end with the 1000 also is the ute diff from a 1000 stronger than the sedans as that is the case with the 1200s

I dont think that the ute diffs are any different, but I am sure Dodgeman will clarift that.

I am currently cutting down a skyline lsd for my 1k and the motor is a turboed a15. Its pretty much the best choice available. You could run with a smaller diff like the H165, but your gain would be minimal. For all the cost and effort, go with a Borg Warner. Common as muck, plenty of ratios available, and LSD.

Overkill, perhaps, but better to much and it never breaks, and to little and all that money wasted.

One thing to remember is that a diff is designed to handle touque, not Horsepower.

In theory your could run a blown 454 witha H145 and it would survive. As long as you were real gentle with the clutch release, and you never reved it much. I dont reccomend you try it, but it illustrates the point.

If you want to drop skids, race and for the street then overkill is the answer.

If its a sunday cruiser, then you could possibly get away with the H145.

Money wise the skyline diff is great at around 1k all up.

However 3 pice Alfa 105 GTV diffs are all alloy finned centre with fins and finned extended sump, unreal and from 3.2 to 4.4 available. However 50 per cent more all up than the skyline one.

my favourite diff which would be perfect also for a 1k is this bugatti one

Hi D, that Alfa diff is intersting mate. Does it need to be shortened or is it roughly right?
Also, how hard are LSD's to find?

Cheers, Ian

They are available but Alfa enthusiast like to keep them for rainy days. Best try the wrecker of italian cars (alfa, fiat, lancia etc.

The best way is too look at the price this place in ballarat charged one of our members on this forum $450 for the lot to shorten a skyline diff, re-spline the axles after shortening and then using the datsun 1200 drums etc.
The stud pattern needs to be changed to 4 stud nissan not 4 stud alfa. The best way is to use chopped pintara disc axle tubes and the skyline axles resplined to suit the Alfa. The Alfa has 27 splines.
Alfa gtv 105
Alfa berlina 2000
autos and manuals have different ratios
eg. 4.11, 4.5, 3.2 and others
