I know there has been big debate about rack and pinion and i have read plenty of info on the subject.I have been speaking to qualified steering and suspension guys in various places over the last 2 months and basically it boils down to getting the rack as close to size as possible to suit.FYI i have found a KB Laser rack is very close to the correct length and with equally shortened shafts looks like it will work.will post pics as it goes...

hi maddatto just a quick hello and to tell about my 1200 ute with nissan micra power steer rack had to move the pivot point on the crossmember out about 20mm per side and shorten the outer arms on the rack but with the strut/brake/wheel setup im using it works out perfect. And yes i have increased the track abit and plan to run small flares

Approx what model year/s is a KB Laser? (Presume we are talking Ford Laser/Mazda 323?)

The starter motor position on a "A" series can be a problem with the steering spindal touching the starter motor on a R/H drive car

true there isnt a lot of clearance but it does fit.i have some nice stainless universals lined up and will give it the clearance it needs.Being a KB laser or 323 i imagine it would be mid 80's or even a little later.Ots amazing how close to size it is but i still have to make the mounts and turn down the rack ends..not hard really..will post the pics when done..still working on the other mods..my mate in taiwan is sending me some new seats over in my next container..cant wait

Wow i would love to see that article! That was a damn good magazine, the only bad point was that there was too much euro trash and not enough Jap cars! Mind you every edition seemed to have at least one escort in it so that kind of made up for it...

On the BMC R&P note, a guy here in NZ was going to use a minor 1000 rack in his 1200 coupe. Don't know how far he got with it but he knows what he's doing and it sounded like a good option.

anyone tried a rack from a b11 sunny? there was a manual rack available, I had one in my beater car, that's the one part i miss.

theoretically, a b11 and a 1200/b210 are going to be about the same width and might be another option.
