To be fair, the datsun ute wouldnt have survived into the 90s due to increasing requirements with cleaner engines.
The change to unleaded wouldnt have mattered, but the progression to efi, cat convertors, plus tighter emission laws would have pushed the a series into the dark ages. Add to the fact that it is pushrod, and it just wouldnt keep up with modern cars.
Nissan would have had to stuff a micra engine or simialr into it, make it front wheel drive, and then redesign the whole car, eventually turning it into a ute version of the micra. Yeah that would have been cool, but it wouldnt compete with the likes of the hilus, navara, rodeo or courier, all of which are sub 20K for the povo 2wd versions.
Hec a brand new Nissan Bakkie is about 19K aussie last time I checked and thats before you import it, and its half the technology of evrything else.
A much as i would love to see a 2008 Nissan bakkie hit aussie shores, I hate it admit it, but it would really only suit the enthusist market. I havent seen a tradie but a Jumbuck yet.
For the record, I love my 1k and the a series that powers it.
