L series conversion query?
Guest_
Looking at the tunnel mods required so far to get my head around this. I know what tunnels other fit eg, stanza, 180 b etc for using a stumpy gear box but wondering if a 120y one can be used as i have access to one free and 120y's came with L series in Japan.

Doubt they would have used a different tunnel seeing auto and manual 120y tunnels are the same.

Do you have an Auto tunnel ? If not i would imagine that the L series 4 speed is to big for an A sereis 4 speed Tunnel. Though I'm no Datsun GURU.
Edit You have access to what a 120y tunnel ?

what car are you putting it into?

120Y tunnel should have no problem accomodating an L series box.

1200 manual tunnel needs slight massaging around where the tunnel meets the firewall

and you might need to remove the mounting brackets inside the trans tunnel for clearance. I didn't need to with the Stanza 5spd but when I changed to a stumpy Skyline box I did.

Can't comment on a 1200 auto tunnel - never had a 1200 auto...

yeah just massage the tunnel around the lip and the bottom passengers side is its a 1200 manual.' auto's are fine as I had a auto as a test rig but when I installed everything into a manual I had to massage the tunnel. It's because the stumpy box does not taper back after the bellhousing as sharp as the 1200 box.

stanza box is the smaller stumpy mik

so next weekend ill give you a sledge hammer and point you in the direction of the ute, or coupe which ever is closer, and you can see how much it will move

yeah Stanza boxes are the same length as the stumpy box but slightly narrower.

it will move surprisingly easily - I've done it to a coupe and a sedan with a 2lb club hammer. Doesn't take anything like the force you probably imagine. sledgehammer is total overkill!

I am only running a 4 speed behind my l 18 it had a manual tunnel in the car. when I seen the amount of bashing I had to do I took pigdogs advice and cut the tunnel out the end result I think, a far better job.
