Don't ever install any software that says it improves speed, allows you to search better or any other crap like that. Almost all of them are marketing tools, used by people to increase hits on on pages where people get payed a fraction of a cent per hit. DON'T INSTALL THIS KIND OF RUBBISH.

If your computer is too slow, get a faster one, change your ISP, or understand that sometimes some things can't be fast for one reason or another. Installing software will improve things ab out 1 in 1000 cases.

The internet is almost completely overrun with marketing hyped websites run by absolute scum, so much so, that I think very soon, the whole open architecture of the internet will fail. We will be left with a deny-first kind of system so that unsolicited rubbish dosappears, but so does out ability to interact freely. I think that spam is a society changing thing (for the worse) and that serious penalties should be handed out to the offenders. I get so much junk mail now, that I'm seriously considering changing my email client to only recieve email from people that I know.

My answer to your question..also my opinion on these lowlifes that are ruining the internet.

I would never install anything that claims to make a computer faster. If its only me getting the popups, i think its time to backup and format. Havent done it for a couple of years and 115gb of sh*t takes a while to backup.

I agree with you about the scum that have all but taken over the net. i posted my email address on an LCD discussion board and have been getting spam about winning 250million dollars ever since. 20 emails a day of complete crap is beyond a joke.

Im gunna crack open a couple of boxes of blank dvds and vanish from the net 4 a day or two.

Sounds like you got a drive by download on your computer
Things like "LOP" or "Gator/Gain" and stuff hang aroudn some websites and automatically download and install themselves onto your computer...

Do you have Adaware?

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
Download this program and do what it tells you. If it is the frist time you have run it then it will find heaps of stuff.
It is free if it is for your home use too...

Also try out SpyBot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Same deal there. I reckon you should try these ones before you go formatting stuff..

I tried Adaware and that got 60 of them.

Another good program is mail washer, it allows you to bounce spam e-mails without taking them off the server, so the sender thinks the account is gone.

The problem is.. even these so-called "cleaner" programs are just as dodgy. Why do they give them away for free??? Because they have big hearts? NO! It's because they replace one spyware with another. And they make money out of you, just the same way that others do. Trust no-one. It's hard to get a grip on the fact that so many of these sites are trying to screw you from every angle.

You know how these junk emails have embedded pictures.. well the preview pane in Outlook, actually opens these for you creating a "hit" on the crappy site. Making the spam emailer a 1/10 of a cent or something. Oh man it makes me angry.

Reformatting, and actually using the "security features" of Internet Explorer, is the only way to stop it. Unfortunately it makes the whole "surfing" experience more like a session at the dentist, but it's the only way. Unless you use a net boot scenario, that rebuilds your computer regularly. And you keep all of your data files on a seperate file server. Unfortunately, if you are connected to the internet, even owning a home computer means that you need to be as good as the most highly trained LAN Admins.

So, to balance all of this negativity, here's a link that I'm sure we will all enjoy:

The mail washer program is written by a guy here in Christchurch; he even includes his phone number on the program, so I believe he is probably pretty sincere.
He provides a free basic (almost full) version and basicly asks that if you like that you purchase the pro version which has a few extra features.

Thanks for the tips dattodude...
I've always wondered about those speed-up and "stop pop-ups" things.

I was pretty sure they were a scam, but just wondered none-the-less.

Thanks Lobster!! Adaware took out 304 badsters and then I followed up with Spybot which tagged another 18. I forgot how fast this PC was supposed to be!
