Hi all,

What are peoples thoughts on the need for a steering box brace (I know Maddat make them).

I know the 1600 really benefits, any real reason to fit on the 1200, do they suffer from a similar problem.

Keep in mind, this is for a rally car, so I have no interest in how good it looks.

Thanks

Damien

I think yes, they are reasonably cheap so would only have to help a little in my book to be worth it. Worst case is if it doesn't help at all then take it off and your down $85 plus postage.

Big tyres.. it's got to help.
It's hard to measure the benefit I guess.

It was 'a fashion' in 2004/2005 when they first came out.. Yes I have one

to my mind, the steering box is bolted to the chassis rail, strongest part of the car - box section of steel

what are you really going to add by securing it also to a flimsy inner skin panel

looks good though!

I've never noticed the steering box flex on a 1200, but my 1600 has no motor in it atm, and I was blown away by the amount of flex there was just moving the wheel fore and aft a small amount. But, the 1200 steering box isn't as tall as the 510 box, so there isn't as much leverage forcing the mounting to flex.
That said, even if a small amount of flex is aliviated, then a handling edge is gained. and most of us will do whatever we can to get a bit more from our dattos, so why wouldn't we do it?
Bugger paying for one though. I'd just make one myself.
