I always figured when people were talking about dogleg 5-speeds they WERE talking about the 56 direct 5th transmission, otherwise known as "low-back" here in Japan. However I also thought these were available in B210's (120y) as well.

It depends on whom you are talking to.

Notice this Nissan North America advertisement. It clearly shows:
- dogleg pattern
- overdrive

That sure is the dogleg pattern, but i note with interest that it does not actually say that 5th is an overdrive ratio. It says that it works "LIKE" an overdrive. If this car ran a 3.7 to 1 diff ratio, then the nice low first gear would handle takeoffs nicely & the higher diff ratio wouls make it feel "like" an overdrive.

I don't suppose you have access to the other side of that brochure? If it has detailed specs, it might reveal the truth & we would all know for sure.

My box is from one of these cars & the original gearknob was good untill i loaned the car to my brother & his f#%@*ng dog chewed it up. I took the car back & he hasn't been game to contact me since. It's been about eight years.

I have the close ratio dog leg in one of my coupes. Heckuva tall 1st gear (50 mph) and then she only drops about 300 rpms each change after that. They are awesome although a little fragile and they are worth big money in good nick. The other dog leg most of you guys are talking about is overdriven with normal spaced ratios. You'd know the difference if you drove both.

My GX box has a lowish first, with a bit of a gap to second, then they were all nice & close after that. It made driving a real joy. The first gear ratio made towing a boat a practical proposition, even in hilly terain.

The B-210 photo is a one-page advertisement.

When it says "like an overdrive", it's probably because of american confusion about overdrive ... american cars of the 60s and 70s didn't have them generally speaking. People were only familiar with the separate overdrive box bolted to the transmission or differential.

In any case, those cars are definitely overdrive 5-speed, it is the 60-series transmission (60L rather than 60A I think). That's also how they got 50mpg, which is better than 2004 us models. The B-210s had 3.7 or 3.9 diffs.

I must agree with matsfatdat, around the $400 make is about right. If someone has payed $1500 for a used dogleg 5 speed then they have been "taken for a ride" by the seller.
It's usually the trick ones that have been beefed up with straight cut gear sets and bigger front shaft that attract the top dollars because the gearsets alone are worth something like $1000 and with the front shaft mods you can add a bit more. Awesome gearbox though, they sound excellent with straight cut gearsets.
