My CA18DET had less that 100kW at the wheels and for general driving the Ute Diff never looked like breaking. I did have tramp rods on the car, and that stops movement that
would normally kill a diff.

My new engine will have some 170kW at the wheels and I'm looking to cut down an LSD/Disc brake Commodore diff for that purpose. I like being able to buy local spares.

Hey gt535, in case you aren't in Australia, 1KW=1.3hp. I had to ask once so I thought Id save some time. My 175hp Z-20 powered 1200 runs with a B-210 rear axle that has
the spider gears welded. I've never had a problem with it.

Can I offer another suggestion for you ???
If you use a Pintara diff you get the stud pattern you want and discs that fit inside 14inch rims, but have the luxury of it accepting a Commodore LSD or an aftermarket
minispool. The reason for this is that internally they are both BorgWarner 78 series diffs. The Pintara also has a better ratio, 4.11.
Regards

James

You are the man, thanks for the suggestion.
I was going to get the Commodore diff for only $120 LSD or not, the wrecking
yard man didn't care.
But I'd like to simplify the stud pattern issue.

It is a conversion I am currently involved in on another car, but we are using a minispool. The Pintara stud pattern and disc set up was spot on, and 4.11 is a lot better ratio
than you get in most Commodores. The Pintara tailshaft yoke is also smaller than the Commodore, one making it easier to match to smaller cars.
Have fun

about the pintara diff, i heard it was 80mm wider. I have trx rims with 195/50/15s do you recon that diff would fit with this tyre
combo under my ute?

They are wider. I would think it would fit with different offset rims. We got the one i'm involved with, shortened at a light engineering place. That kept everything
else nice and simple.

What is a Pintara in NZ-speak? Is that just a 4-cyl Skyline or what? Do they have the same diff as commodore? Commodores, falcons, valiants, aussie skylines, do these all have the same
Borg Warner in them? I remember an article in Street Machine a couple of years back- is that the diff? They'd be BLOODY heavy wouldn't they? I've been on the hunt for an H165 LSD for ages
but they're hard to find. Borg warner LSDs are cheap and lying under just about every rusty old HQ ute around. Might look at that for my coupe... just the increase in unsprung weight that
puts me off

They are not that heavy considering that they provide a bullet proof rear end for stuff all. They are easy to narrow and have a good selection of ratios. With a set of spring pads welded on
an XE/XF Falcon disc brake unit gives you big brakes as well. They also have a watts linkage mount on the alloy back cover which saves a little weight and polishs up really nicely. I have
just done a Coupe with the Falcon arse end and RX7 Series 4 Turbo front hubs and brakes. The hubs are alloy as are the beautiful 4 pot calipers. By using the Nissan 50mm dia strut tube you
slip it into the Mazda bottom half. Use the Mazda alloy bottom arms and bolt them to the Nissan bottom arm. The RX7 bolt pattern(turbo) is the same as the Ford so sourcing wheels is no
problem.
