Your camper's motor makes good torque if they are right!

Can't find figures for SII Bluebirds which my engine is out of, but SI had (http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/brochures_datsun_bluebird.htm)
69.9kW @5600 (93.6bhp)
152Nm @3200 (112lb-ft)
at the flywheel. That's DIN bhp so it includes accessories and exhaust. Not much changed with the SII bluebird AFAIK apart from electronic ignition and maybe more pollution controls so it should be very similar.

Being generous to Nissan and using only 20% drivetrain loss, that gives 78bhp and 93lb-ft at the wheels.

So my turbo L20B makes 70% more peak power and 35% more peak torque. Which is not bad for 7psi - ie less than half an atmosphere but makes 70% more power!

This reminds me of the going's on back in the early eighties in an Australian magazine called 'Turbo'. They'd have some hotted up Holden (GM) or Ford with big money spent on it, new highest horsepower reading, then someone would bring out a 1600, or maybe a 200B or a Bluebird, all with an L20B & basic turbo & blow it away for a tenth of the money spent. It was brilliant. The L series engine was just a perfect basis for a turbo, it was all there already. Now Harry is reliving those days. Thanks Harry
for reminding me just how much car-nige you can cause with a small car & an engine that just wants boost.

This thing has got me now looking at a cheap local 140z for sale instead of importing my b10 from melb. Ive always love the Ys

sorry for the Qs but one last one, arent you underestimating it a little or being conservative saying just more peak tq and hp?. This L would have way more useful oomph under the graph than an a highly strung NA making the same hp and tq with a stock box.

I think he's smart about It. Got it running RELIABLY at lower boost etc at first. He's got some room for more later but from my Impressions it's a budget build at this stage.
Gearbox won't like too much more torque that's for sure.
Great use able power and torque is where it's at. Outright power levels is nice for numbers but use able with out the heat soak stresses etc will get him across the line and drive to and from the track

yeah it's the old school way - Dattos always used to be about going fast on the cheap. That all started changing since people started dropping in CA/SR turbos.

D - do it, 140Z's are the ultimate in cool B210s.
Peak values were the easiest things to compare - bugger working out area under the curve! lol But you're right - the turbo engine has more torque even down where the stock peak is and it only climbs from there, while the stock curve is going downhill as fast as mine rises.

Unfamilia nailed it. Budget build ftw. Even in this mild state of tune, it's more than enough power to have some fun with and do decent times, and it should be reliable - I'll be as gentle on the gearbox as I can, but it's not that big a deal if I have to fit the stronger 71B box anyway. And the low 7psi boost shouldn't get the inlet temps up too much, and certainly shouldn't be too much for the tough L series bottom end and 8.5:1 CR. Like Paul says, these L20s are basically built turbo-ready with compression ratios like that!
And it turned out the low boost means it can use heaps of timing without any fancy ignition controllers for boost retard or a dodgy locked dissy, which was a little unexpected. Even the dyno guy raised his eyebrows when he asked about ignition timing while setting it up on the dyno. The timing is the secret to it's driveability and power.

btw - I highly recommend Marty at STZ in Virginia. I thought it would be too old-school or oddball for anyone these days, but he was all over it - knows carby turbos inside out and was keen to tune it. I learnt heaps talking to him as well.

The guys at Option1Garage have been great too.

EDIT: Nismo just so not to pollute Harrys thread further ive started a thread discussion http://datsun1200.com/modules/newbb/v ... id=463118#forumpost463118

D just been reading this discussion and wondering do you just want a 140z motor or complete car.Shikes man those are scarce even here in south africa --they do pop up every now and then but you gotta know what you looking for cos here in South Africa there's alot of a-holes who try to sell the 140y gx as a 140z.I have not seen a 160z for a long time but there's still a few running around. The 140z on speedhunters [catching Z's in africa]is quite a car and i've seen that thing give a Canam a hard time but did'nt realise the chap is running a l20 motor [2.2l]-- can get the specs --speedhunters. The owner is martin richards --They [him + bother]also got a site mighty datsuns[140z+1200gx]race cars-- i know the Z was for sale at some stage--crazy price though s/thing like R150,000.00 approx US15000.The other datsun 140z i know of is chap in Middleburg [road car]Ithink if you google Riaan's datsun 140z you will prob get to his build. I think he is building another 140z.If i remember correctly he sold a Z to s/body in Aus --chap just flew over took a look and bought the car.Anyway all the best with one of those -- complete car or engine

OK... well I'll start with the good stuff. Nothing broke! :) Car ran fine all day, apart from seeming to starve for fuel at the top of 4th gear in the last session. Not sure what's going on there. I also had to wind a little timing out of it after the 1st session. It started pinging after 3 laps, but it was a 34 degree day. It was fine after that.
Cooling system was great - never got over 85degrees! Way better than the Soarer and 180SX etc that i've been tracking for the last 5yrs. They all get hot after a few laps.
Brakes were good too - easily up to the job and no fade.

but... It does not handle! Far too soft, too much body roll and it hits the rear bump stops = sideways & lols, but not so much fast. I just about destroyed the left rear tyre - tore it to shreds! So times weren't great, I think my best was a 1:07.4 which is couple of seconds off what I was sort of hoping for, but really it was just a first outing to see what's what, and the real success is that it drove home at the end of the day. And I know what I need to work on now

Ha! That was brilliant. It certainly does go sideways.

Once you get all the slop out of that suspension it looks like it'll be a bit of a track weapon. You did a good job to keep such good control of it and still pass a few.
