Whilst trying to perform a standstill, my datto went bang. After this I lost all gears. Is this because my gearbox is stuffed or is it possibly something worse. Please help inexperianced dato enthusiast.

Where are the crunchy/banging noises now coming from ?

If the engine idles then it's probably ok. But I've heard of broken crankshafts that only show symptoms when put under load. eg. Wheb clutch is engaged.

Does the clutch feel very light? Can you feel it engage?

Empty the oil from the gearbox, look to see if bits of gears bearings etc come out with the oil?

Jack up the back of the car on the diff centre. See if the diff still works.

Then go and find the broken bits at the local wrecking yard.

Chris.

By a stand still do you mean a burnout? If so than I guess you were using the brakes, yeah? If your car starts and sounds fine it is your gearbox, if it sounds sick or wont start at all, than you probably have done some engine damage. When you do burnouts with brake, it is a good idea to make sure the brake bias is right off to the front. If it is standard than your engine is not only trying to break traction, but push the rear brakes as well. This causes a heap of stress that your drive train and engine does not really need.

Throw us some more info & we will be able to help you more.

Hi I once had bang while downshifting no gears were available and no noise from trans.
turned out i blew up the clutch disc. Remove
the inspection cover and see if pieces of the disc fall out.

Inspection cover? In the immortal words of Gary Coleman, "Whachoo talkin' 'bout Willis?" None of the boxes I've seen have inspection covers. Or am I missing something?

Ok npt really a inspection cover . I am talking about the cover that bolts to the front of trans that covers the flywheel. does that make more sense.

Yes the engine does go and it doesn't sound sick at all, theres just no gears at all. I think the clutch is engageing but dont know how to check to see if it is. The only other thing that I can think of is possibly the diff. As you can probably tell i dont know too much about cars, but im thinking that it is most likely the gearbox, right?

Oh yeah i was wondering if it is the gearbox do I need to replace the whole thing and if so is it possible to put in other types of 4 speeds other than another 1200 gearbox. Thanks for all the replies.

Hey TK - to check whether it is the diff or the box have a mate lie on the ground (away from the wheels!) and see whether the drive shaft turns when you put it in gear. If it turns then you blew the diff - if it doesn't then it's the g/box. You can put in a 120Y box or a Sunny box or even a Toyota box if you wish. A 1200/120Y will be the cheapest depending where you live.

i'm betting thats its the diff :)

From what you've said, its most likely diff. Doing what teretonga said is the best and easiest way to check if you've killed a diff.

Betting counter is now open....winner gets my datto :)

cheers dudes
