First question, is it possible ?
As the engine is the same size as the sr20 engine, and 174kw @ 8300 it is hard to look pass it, with a 6 speed box as well. The weight of a Datsun 1000 is half a s2000 and the power of that engine, I'am excited as big kev would say.
Second question, can the car be road registered in NSW ?
Third question, on the Datsun 1000 is there 2 series and if there is did one of them come out with coils and struts in the front and the other with leaf and shocks?
This conversion was done in the US with a Datsun 1600 and a Honda s2000 engine and gear box with heaps of room to place a turbo setup as well.

Simply stated - yes if you can afford to put in the hard yards and hard cash.
It will need to be registered as "Individually Constructed"
Technically stated - Individually Constructed needs to meet 2005 Australian Design Rules.
Airbags, side intrusion bars, front end crumple zone, etc etc etc.
But yes it can be done.

What is the biggest engine you can fit into the Datsun 1000?

As i spoke to a Engineer and he stated that the 1200 can have a 1.8 turbo or a 2.something litre N/A engine legally and be road registerable, with small upgrades like brakes and a clean car.

Ive wondered about this conversion too, and have always had it in the back of my mind for a couple of years now....trouble is that all my constant searching of an S2000 front cut has benn utterly fruitless.
Second is that you are looking only at the 176kw figure...it is an engine that is basically a lightswitch and comes on only after 5000rpm. Not something that is particularly a street friendly engine. Good for racing however ...but it will be big bucks and something I dont know if youd be necessarilty enthralled with. I rackon a hot A series is more the go...more than enough power for the humble 1000

I forget the calculation, but from memory it was like 1.6litre or just under 1.7. Someone else will remember the calculations. If not its on the RTA website.

2.0L NA in a 1000 would be fine.

1200 Is 1.8L Turbo /2.3L NA.

A Datsun 1000 is 90% the weight of a 1200.

90% of 2300cc = 2020cc

Only god and some strange little men know about the sump fitment on a 1000.

Yeah what Dattodude said sounds right. Naturally Aspirated you could do that engine under "Modified Production" like most people do.
Disreguard what I previously said unless you thinking turbo. 1.6litre is the biggest turbo engine you can fit in "Mod Pro"

All 1000's had transverse leaf front suspension.

NSW RTA Vehicle Standard.

I know its front wheel drive, but does that mean I can put the 2.4 out of my accord euro into my Datto. Won't the Honda be a bit of a slug if I put the 1200 in to replace it? Ahhh, the possibilities.
