if you get out to a few meets at collingrove you may have seen a very tidy yellow 1200 coupe, this beast runs an Lseries (not sure which size) but if you decide to swing that way and you want to see how it has been done in the flesh catch up with that bloke, i dont know his name/address but no doubt he might be able to help you in some way ;)

I have just started running club sprints over the last 3 months. I run a 1200 with a A14.
I am in the under 1499cc class. Its a very competative class. There are only about 4 or so cars in my class at each meet but but all our lap times are about 2 seconds apart. Its a great class & every one gets along well beacuse we all run so close. Also an A series at 8000rpm with twin webers sounds awsome.

personally, I'd go for the car that's cheapest to get into (rules out 1600's), easiest to modify to a useful competition standard for starters (pretty much rules out the 1000) and then has the most potential for future upgrades/mods.

For my money, its the 120Y. Wider track than a 1200, can easily accomodate bigger wheels & tyres than the 1200 (especiallthe 120Y coupe) and easy L series conversions if you want to step up a class later on.

i have thaught about the 120y opption
but i allready have 2 1200 shells sitting in my back yard i will probbebley build one of them up and if i break it most of the parts interchange with the 120y so i will just swap them all over but then i guess if i use the 120y it already has disk brakes my other option would be a stanza as they run the
L series and are much eiser to find performance parts for
what are the limitations on what you can do tho the motor if say i race with an a14 in the curcuit racing (mallala)

Between organizing our Rally and instructing at track days I get this qouestion a lot so I will give my standard answer. If you can weld , wrench , machine and fabricate then build your own car..... otherwise buy a ready to race car. It doens't have to be state of the art but a decent basic starter car
Since we are 1200 specific here I will tell you that when I went to SCCA drivers school we had a stock A12 cut z car springs in front and lowering blocks in the rear with a set of sway bars and sticky tires.......fun but slow. I was out there running and this is where my infamous motto of "it's faster than a set of bleachers came from"
Whatever you decide and regarless of where you finish you will have fun , my vote is on the 1200 but a 120Y is a good choice as well.

Seeing as you are in Adelaide...Head out to Mallala this weekend. The Improved Production Nationals are being held, and I'll gaurantee it will be some of the best racing you will see - anywhere in the country this year.

You will also see an SR20 turbo powered 1200 at the pointy end of the field - He also also currently holds the lap record for IPRA.
