Against my better judgement I have accepted a postion in NSW - at least the Aussie Rugby team is winning at the moment!

What is the 1200 scene like around Sydney? Any coupes for sale? I have leased a house near Eastern Creek so I can see CA18DET_MAN run his turbo! Speaking of the man - where
are you Andrew? You're pretty quiet at the moment.

Andrew,
What is the CA18DET motor? I saw the photos of yours but I am not familiar with it. What model did it come in? Does it fit the A-series tranny? Is it an easy fit? Any info on it would be
helpful and appreciated. It sort of looks like the FWD Stanza motor but the distributor on it would stick out the front through the radidtor.
We used to race modifieds on a fourth mile dirt high banked oval. (Small block Chevy in a 41 Ford body and a couple of other bodies) The crank bearing web broke out of the block and took
out everything from the radiator to the rear end. The clutch came up through the floor board and parts came through the hood (bonnet). It took $8,000 to get back on the track. I can
relate to your flywheel coming loose.

The CA18-DET is a 1.8L DOHC Turbo (RWD) engine offered in the 240SX overseas (Silvia, right?). US model 240SX's had the n/a 2.4L engine, or KA24DE. The CA18-DET never made it to the US, but
the non turbo version did, the CA-18DE. I think it was in the older 200SX (88-89). I wonder if you could the turbo/exhaust manifold from a CA18ET would fit on the DET??? If so, you could
piece together your own CA18-DET, or just get one from an engine importing place on the West Coast($$$$$). Since the import racing scene has blown up in the US, it is getting much more
popular for people to turn their slow US models into Japanese models by getting the parts through these importing places. Probably the most popular imported motor however is the SR20DET that
people are putting in their Sentras and 200SX's.....or 1200's :) Someone in this club is doing a SR20DET swap as we speak! Hope it's going good.

Loose flywheels are a nightmare! I had one bolt in my flywheel that wasn't torqued down all the way, and man that was a pain! Even though it never came out, it caused enough vibration to
destroy 4 or 5 starters, 2 transmissions, and disintegrated a clutch disk into nothing. Make sure your flywheels/clutches are torqued properly!!!

Yep, the CA18DET was available in both FWD and RWD configurations. Neither in Australia.
the FWD version was in the Nissan EXA 1989-1992
and the RWD in the earlier Silvia 200SX, same vintage. My CA18DET has been in my 1200 for about 3 years or so, never had a problem. Also there's a CA18T which is a single
cam turbo version using the same block. The engine has the same bellhousing as the 910 Bluebirds. Also the same as the 2.0L 6Cyl Japanese Skylines.

With the question/idea of turning a CA18DE into a turbo version (CA18DET) by using the exhaust manifold and turbo, i strongly recomend NOT doing this as the CA18DET engines have stronger
internals to handle the forced induction where as the CA18DE has not been built to handle the forced induction and you would find things breaking too easily unless you did some beefing up of
nearly every component. Why bother when you can get an import CA18DET.

The CA18DET comes out of the older 180SX (hatch) and older model (pre 90's) Silvia netting 131kw standard. The later model Silvia's (not 200SX's) ran with the SR20DET's making 153kw
standard. The 200SX (the Australian name) or Silvia (Japanese name) obviously runs SR20DET because of the 200 in the name, all 200SX's eg.1995-1998 had the SR20DET.
The CA18DET powered Silvia's are NOT 200SX's (and not 180SX's they were only hatches), they were never avaliable in Australia hence they keep the import name of Silvia and they also only had
1.8litres not 2, remeber the 200 in the name.
The later model shape of the 200SX, powered by the SR20DET was avalible in Australia not as an import and aussie Nissan gave them the name of 200SX instead of Silvia but they are correctly
named by enthusiasts as Silvia's.

Incase anyone needs more figures on the non-turbo's:
CA18DE - 101kw@6400rpm
- 16.2kgm@5200rpm

SR20DE - 105kw@6400rpm
- 18.2kgm@4800rpm

And the turbo's

SR20DET Turbo - Power 205ps(153kw) @6000rpm
- Torque 28.0kgm @4000rpm

CA18DET Turbo - Power 175ps(131kw) @6400rpm
- Torque 23.0kgm @4000rpm

I hope people understand what I have written as its an absolute mess, sorry.

I'm the one doing the SR20DET swap. It's going well. I picked up my intercooler last night, and two day ago ordered my boost controller, MAF and injectors from Jim Wolf
Technology. I will order the turbo this week as well.

I will end up with 320+ hp (238KW). You can track my progress at www.datsuns.com/projects/1200.
