hey all
I have a yr12 auto tech assignment due in 2 weeks an need sum help on a few tech questions. They go as follow. All help is much apprectiated.

1) State 5 electrical parts where magnetism plays an important role in its operation. Also state what the magnetism does in each part.

2) Explain in detail how to set up and use a multimeter to determine the possible faults that would cause one headlight to be dull. Keeping in mind the possibility of damaging the on board computer.

3) Explain fully the correct way to install a set of driving lights to prevent an electrical short occurring in a vehicle. State the importance of safety.

4) Use the relevant specification manual to state the correct specifications related to a 308 cubic inch Holden engine

Number of cylinders:

Spark plug gap:

Ignition points gap:

Dwell angle:

Ignition timing:

Idle speed:

Point gap:

THANKS GUYS. AS I SAID ANY HELP AT ALL WOULD BE GREAT

Hey Tommy, aren't you supposed to get the answers from your textbooks?

Anyways, answer or partial answer to Number 3 (driving lights) was discussed yesterday and earlier today here in the main forum. Something about preventing the wires from getting burned out.

1) State 5 electrical parts where magnetism plays an important role in its operation. Also state what the magnetism does in each part.

1. Starter Motor - Provides rotation
2. Hall effect Sensor - Used for switching electronic ignition in distributor.
3. Magnetic switch on tailshaft for cruise control.
4. speedometer - cushioned interface between mechanical cable to dial.
+ central locking solenoids, motor for electric sunroof, windscreen wiper motor, windscreen washer pump, electric fuel pump, A/C electric fan, radiator fan.

2) Explain in detail how to set up and use a multimeter to determine the possible faults that would cause one headlight to be dull. Keeping in mind the possibility of damaging the on board computer.

1. (for wimps) detach the battery, detach the ECU, connect the battery, test the lights.
1. Resistance to ground (OHMS)
2. Voltage to ground (should be 13.8+) (VOLTS)
3. Current Draw (faulty light) (AMPS measured in series)

3) Explain fully the correct way to install a set of driving lights to prevent an electrical short occurring in a vehicle. State the importance of safety.

3A) Use of relays to switch the High current required for the lights. Use the 12V from the standard high beam lights to trigger the relay to turn on. This satisfies registration requirements.

4) Use the relevant specification manual to state the correct specifications related to a 308 cubic inch Holden engine

Number of cylinders: 8
Spark plug gap: See manual
Ignition points gap: See manual
Dwell angle: See manual
Ignition timing: See manual
Idle speed: See manual (750rpm?)
Point gap: See manual

You are lucky that you are NOT one of my students, I would fail you for not doing it yourself.
The object of the exersize is to teach you how and where to find the information you need, when you need it.
QUIT BEING LAZY and do your homework yourself, don't depend on someone else to do it for you.
Nobody likes a cheater.

No doubt the teacher would want this question answered exactly like Dattodude did, but to me its a kinda trick question. In all my working experience I have never seen a car that the headlights are anyway involved with the computer, maybe the body control module but this is just relays. The only thing they both use is the same 12v battery and only a doofus could stuff up and induce a voltage spike to harm the computer from the headlights. More likely the same doofus would short his spanner across the battery when he was disconnecting its terminals or he would reconnect it backwards and wreck everything.
But then again back in my Tech days I do remember seeing another apprentice set off an airbag which burst his eardrum and nearly broke his neck all because he probed his testlight into the airbag wires even though they are wrapped up in bright yellow tape to warn you " Don't Touch These Airbag Wires"

Unless questions are asked how is someone supposed to find out information and learn. Its an assignment, you know find information and use it. How exactly is that cheating?

Hey Guys, dont be so hard on him...at least he came to THE site with a bunch of Datsun -orientated professionals who are willing to help him out. Why go to a text book when he has the whole internet to surf to find the info???
Im glad that he came to us, thats what this site is for. (however I do know how you feel, I had to do my HSC too during the age of non-information)

Why is the gap for the ignition contact points asked for twice? [Q4, lines 3 and 7] Is this a trick question?
