Hi po evolution of the piston engine and tried to get the designer to look at it for the A series but hes making it for the K series at the moment because the K series is used for many cars around the world such as kit cars, lotus, caterhams and others by Rover to name a few. This design was used by some privateer racers in the 50s only to be banned. They made 6 cylinder holden engines back them rev to 10000rpm and made more power than anything even for todays standards. But big arrs cavities like repco made sure they didnt become the trend.

Anyone know if the K series came to australia in any rebadged rover honda integras or anything besides lotus or Mgs of today. The capacity is 1.8 litres.

that's a great idea there. i hope something like that comes into production. an engine like that would take well to forced induction.

it's a pity that techonology like that is destined for hybrid vehicles....

what makes me wonder, is that something like a rotary valve head that seems fairly basic and has such good benefits, was never made to start with. imagine that a 6 cylinder holden motor revving to 10 grand, damn my mate has one and it probably doesnt rev past 5 !!!

The rotary valve head has always had sealing problems but today this isnt a problem with rotons patented technique.

Pity only K series will be getting them first!

Oh my avatar is a little spastic but it used to be a good pussy.

If i remember rightly, Dunstan in South Australia made the rotary valve head for the early Holden side plate motor.

I believe that this head was made in three versions, the first two being driven from the flywheel end for boat use. The third design was front driven for automotive use.

An edition of Modern Motor magazine in 1958 caried an article on one, but i don't remember if my father wrote it [he was a freelance motoring journalist] I have a copy of the magazine, so i will see if i can find it.

The featured engine was claimed to deveolp 200hp on "dope" which i presume was methanol [alky] it was injected [controlled fuel leak] & it was claimed that it would rev to 12,000, but was kept below this to avoid "rod stretch"

The rotary valve shaft was hollow, & coolant passed through it to controll the temp in the exhaust area.

An example of the third type [front drive] cylinder head, [reportedly a new one], is owned by a Southern Highlands school teacher, & it may be eventually used on the engine in his '27 Ford roadster, but he will need to remove the Repco "HiPower" head first.
This car is parked next to his '23 "T" roadster with "Gurney Weslake" Indianapolis Ford V8 power. Now that's an engine to admire. Both are street driven.

I saw a write up on a small block ford V8 with the same head design. Even it revved to 10K! I think it was in Popular Hot Rodding about 8-10 years ago. I probably still have the mag just have to search.

Yes I saw the Coates version and if you read the article I posted youll see why the roton design is better, cheaper and closer to success.
The 1958 holden engine you talk about was owned by this racer who died of something in his prime and his son had nothing to do with racing and didnt follow through his dads successful development and sealing solution to his design. Repco made sure though he didnt use it for racing for too long however. imagine if an old holden 6 could rev that high!! meaning a strong developed A series could rev to 16000rpm!!!
