Not sure if it's illegal or cops just hate it! a fair few of my mates have modded cars the main thing is i think just no v8's or turbo's, not particularly sure but i'll find out if a cop pulls me over haha
I'll probably just go with s13 so the gear box isn't to much of a hassle because i definitely don't feel like cutting any trans tunnels!

Hey dude. Before you jump into this have min 10 grand spending money to do conversion because itcost heaps to do. Most people spend double that.

Plus my friend just told me of a place that engineers sr20 conversion

i agree with oda70 but i rekon if you want a top notch job and are going to restore the whole car your budget should be closer to $20k...
i am about 65% through my build and i rekon by the time its on the road will be just over or right on 20k.. i am very pedantic however so everything on my ute has to be perfect and almost everything on/in it is new or fully restored.. mine is a CA18DET conversion fyi..

Hey don, 20k is quitq a bit of money!
I don't plan on doing a full rebuild, i plan on doing it in stages as i dont have the confidence or knowledge yet to do a complete restore/rebuild

I agree with don_1200 I'm only just getting to paint stage and I'd think mine owes me around 15g and prob 5g more to spend

My plan is within the next 3-5 buy a datto do the sr20 conversion, upgrade dif and brakes, then in another 5 months or so i'll be doing coil overs and then the last will be the interior that's all i plan on doing, i'll end up doing more but not a full rebuild all at once

hey mate

Heres a tip.pickup a full running sr/ca s13 or 180sx and u can save heaps.esp the ones without rego/rwc but in good nick,all the running gear will be there.Don't go buying engine by itself etc etc Strip whatever u want and sell the shell or parts to reimburse ur money.plenty of market for silvia stuff.

The rest spend on engine mounts etc whatever u need to get an engineers certificate.There are ways to save on builds.

Bodywork i think is what costs heaps if doing a proper ground up restoration.i myself prefer rough body cars.if car gets hit all you have to do is transfer its gear to another shell etc Cars with very expensive bodywork paint kinda become very hard to drive as dailies.cant park at shopping centers, always in fear of debri chipping of 15k worth of paint etc etc

Some guys import worked/track cars from japan which wont be complied in oz just to get their high hp engines and performance mods and saves thousands as compared on buying turbos ecus etc etc separately.They then sell the parts of them i.e racing chairs, doors,body kits ,doors,6pot brakes etc and recouped heaps back.

a12grunt is on the money.

Buy a full s13 or a half cut. I sourced parts from everywhere and now regret not just forking out 2k on a working s13 to use

however if you do EVERYTHING yourself you will save $$$ - I painted, welded, rewired, made my own crossmembers, made lots of little things to get around problems, and had good advice from someone who had done some of this stuff before.

this site has examples of nearly every type of build you could consider.

My advice, other than buy an s13 donour to start with, .... do it in stages that you can manage, finish those tasks and enjoy the fact that you got something done, plan plan plan.
