Datsun 1200 used a traditional vane-type water pump, driven by the fan belt. The same pump was used from 1966 Datsun B10 to some 1982 Datsun B310. However, air conditioning-equipped models used a different hi-performance pump, and some models used a short-shaft pump.

Comparison
There are two basic water pumps for A-series engines:
- Datsun 1200 is long shaft, large pulley (spins slower)
- Newer is short shaft with spacer, small pully (spins faster)
- Note that the pulley bolts are wider apart in the newer pump
- Newer pump has studs for the spacer
- Some aftermarkets pumps have a sheet-metal impeller, smaller but more agressive
- Genuine Hitachi and Atsugi pumps (both A12 and A15) have a cast iron impeller

Fan
Datsun 1000 used a metal 4-blade fan. Datsun 1200 uses a tough plastic 4-blade fan of 310 mm diameter (12.2 inch). They are strong and not known to break. Some newer A14 used the same diameter fan but with a negative offset and was used with a spacer. Most newer engines used a 330mm fan with spacer. Datsun 1200 used no spacer, but used a longer water pump. 330mm fan was Datsun 1200 OPTION FOR TROPICAL USE.
There are four Diameter of fans for RWD A-series engines:
- Lo-output engine: 310 mm diameter plastic (used on A10/A12/A13/A14/A15)
- High-output engine: 330 mm diameter plastic (also B110 OPTION)
- PB310 and HB310: 350 mm diameter - steel, 7 blades
- Electric fan: 320 mm diameter, steel 5-blade (some 1980-1982 B310s)
In USA, A/C 1200s got a flexi-fan (fibreglas blades), while B210, B310 used #2 above.

Electric Fan
N10
You can fit the Datsun 310 (N10 Pulsar) fan into a 1200:
B310
The Datsun 210 (B310) "MPG" model featured an electric fan. MPG models had Manual transmission, chassis RSFU, RFN, from Sep 1980 with A14 engine w/o AC:
- HLB310RSFU
- "R" 2-dr sedan, "S" Standard model, "F" Five-speed, "U" USA Federal (non-California)
- HLB310RFN
- "R" 2-dr sedan, "F" Five-speed, "N" Canada
HL means: "H" A14 engine, "L" Left-hand-drive
Like other B310s it used a 13 psi radiator cap.
Part Numbers
From 1980-1982 B310 USA, Canada manual
- 21590-H9900 MOTOR ASSY-W/SHROUD
- fan: 320mm diameter with 5 blades
- 21595-M0206 SWITCH-THERMO
- ON: 83-87 C (181-189 F)
- OFF: 78-81 C (172-178 F)
- 05412-1600P GASKET-B
- 21596-M3000 ADAPT-THERMO SWITCH
- inline adapter, fits in lower radiator hose
Pulleys
There are at least two pulleys:
- Datsun B110: 5.05" diameter, 2.33" high, locating hub 0.85"
- Datsun B310: 4.22" diameter, 1.74" high with spacer, locating hub 1.98"
The long pump (B110) uses a fan with positive offset. The short pump (B310) uses a fan with negative offset, but with a spacer. The overall height of fan from block face is the same for both model.
- Original Style: 1.970 inch bolt centers.
- 21051-18000 PULLEY-FAN & WATER PUMP (D=124) through 1979 (A10, A12, A13, A14, A12A)
- New style: 2.362 inch bolt centers. The spacer has 1.970 holes on the fan end.
- 21051-H9900 PULLEY-FAN & WATER PUMP (D=124) From 0879
The two combos of pump/fan/spacer interchange as a whole combo. The newer type allows the fan to be unbolted while the radiator is still in the car.
Presumably the A-series moved to a small diameter pulley to increase pumping flow. But there is chance of cavitation at high speeds speed approaching 8,000 RPM.
