Datsun 1200 came with different mirrors for different markets. Mainly:

  • left-hand-drive vs right-hand-drive models
  • fender-mounted for Japanese market vs door-mounted for other markets

In general, coupe and sedan used the same mirrors.

Japan Market

In Japan, mirrors are mounted on the top edge of the front fenders. It seems they always use two, on both R.H. and L.H. fenders.

GX

GX models had round guard-mounted "bullet-style" mirrors. These were also optional on Deluxe and GL models.

The mirrors on these GX models were black with a chrome-like ring.

When fitting fender-mounted mirrors to non-JDM vehicles, use the factory drilling template.

Aftermarket variations include:

  • 1854.jpg aftermarket? all-black
  • 1970.jpg aftermarket? all-chrome
  • 5487.jpg aftermarket? gray with black ring

Datsun 1000 Coupes had an optional bullet mirror. It was all-black with a matte-black finish:

Standard, Deluxe And GL

Standard, Deluxe and GL Body Styles used a rectangular wing-mounted mirror. It was finished in chrome. It differs from non-JDM mirrors in that it had a different stalk for mounting to the top of the fender, and (?) has a slightly trapezoidal shape.

Optional for DX and GL was the GX-style bullet mirrors.

In Australia, you see a lot of Datsun 1200s with JDM-style mirrors. This is an older mirror:

Other Markets

Most markets outside of Japan used a door-mounted mirror. These are strictly rectangular (not trapezoidal). These came in silver-gray or darker-gray matte finishes. Apparently the color changed over the years.

LHD

LHD mirrors were mounted close to the front edge of the door (farther forward than RHD mirrors):

In the North American market, only left-side mirror was offered. The right-side mirror is not in the Nissan USA parts catalog. It is unclear if Chrome was ever offered as a finish. The North American parts catalog lists only one part number, but it is known that the color varied over the years.

RHD

Australian mirrors were dealer installed at the time of 'pre delivery' & can be found in various positions from the rear edge of the flipper window up to the front edge of the door.

Does the AU parts catalog list left-side mirror or only the right-side one?

Reply My Australian parts book lists only one external mirror for Australian Datsun 1200 Four Door Sedans, Coupes & Vans [Four Door Wagons] Part Number 96310 - H1900. & this is listed as being used from 10/71. No left side mirror is shown for the 1200 passenger models & it is not clear what was used up to 09/71, if anything.

Datsun 1200 Utes [B120] up to 1981 are shown on my microfiche as using the same right side door mirror from 10/71 [96301-H1900] with another one, [96301-H9500] also being listed as being used in Australia & interchangeable with the former, but not listed as superceding it as no start date for its use is shown.

A left side mirror, Parts Number 96302 - G1271 is shown for Australian use from 11/80

Two other mirrors are listed with odd details, being 96301-H5950 [right] & interchangeable with the second 1200 car mirror [96301-H5900] This mirror, 96301-H5950 is sjown as being for "AST, OPT [exc. AST]" The left side mirror is 96302-H5950 & is shown with an introduction date of 04/79 but is not listed as being interchangeable with other left side mirrors. This too is shown as being for "AST, OPT [exc. AST]"

Was chrome a stock finish in Australia? All the pics of chrome mirrors look like they are not as tall as non-chrome, so they may be 1600 mirrors. Reply The mirrors on Australian B110 & B210 models appear to be the same & were gray. The Mirrors used on most Australian B310 models were the same as these earlier ones, but were chrome finished. A left side mirror was required by law for Wagons & other commercial types [Vans & Utes] in these years, so the B310 Sportswagon was fitted with a matched pair of chrome mirrors that were 1200 clones.

Note that discontinued (NLA) parts can sometimes be found on eBay or from individual stores (NOS or "New Old Stock"), so adding NLA part numbers to this article is useful.
